Excerpt from Late Blight and Rot of Potatoes Caused by the Fungus Phytophthora Infestans, De Bary These three processes of spore formation, germination and infection can take place only in the presence of sufficient moisture and a suitable temperature. Both spores and swarm spores are quickly killed by drought and sunlight. This partly explains why it is that, although the fungus is present in isolated plants from the time they reach the surface of the ground. It does not spread to any extent until a month, or perhaps two, later. Another reason may be that the plant is more susceptible at and after blossoming time than m its earlier stages.
