This book is a comprehensive guide to Targeted Drug Delivery (TDD), also known as Intrathecal Drug Delivery (IDD), and offers an overview to this unique form of treatment. The medication is delivered by intrathecal pumps and is less common than some other techniques for interventional pain management, but is essential in conditions such as refractory pain, cancer pain, multifocal pain, severe spasticity, and in patients who are not candidates for surgical correction of their underlying condition. This book is the first source to describe both the optimal surgical implantation and patient management aspect of this therapy, and thus will be a valuable single reference guide for interventional radiologists, anesthesiologists, physiatrists, oncologists, neurologists, spine surgeons, palliative care physicians, and primary care physicians.

This project addressed the education needs of family members and patients using intrathecal drug delivery devices for chronic pain management. Health care providers who have experience with intrathecal drug delivery devices were surveyed on patients' information needs and specific gaps in patient education. Providers' responses to the first survey, along with findings from reviewed literature, were used to create an educational module. The module was then sent to the same providers for review. All providers reported the common misconception that intrathecal drug devices will completely remove pain. Other issues mentioned by providers addressed concerns from patients regarding the refill process and activities patients can participate in after receiving the pump. Development of the education module proved to be premature in this early stage of intrathecal pump use. Each provider revealed quite different preferences regarding the frequently asked questions as well as preferences for the different pump models that exist, requiring the need for specific provider and pump educational modules. At this time, an education resource could be created if it addressed the purpose of the pump, information on the refill process, and patient knowledge of the medication used in the pump.

This text provides a comprehensive review and expertise on various interventional cancer pain procedures. The first part of the text addresses the lack of consistency seen in the literature regarding interventional treatment options for specific cancer pain syndromes. Initially, it discusses primary cancer and treatment-related cancer pain syndromes that physicians may encounter when managing cancer patients. The implementation of paradigms that can be used in treating specific groups of cancer such as breast cancer, follows. The remainder of the text delves into a more common approach to addressing interventional cancer pain medicine. After discussing interventional options that are commonly employed by physicians, the text investigates how surgeons may address some of the more severe pain syndromes, and covers the most important interventional available for our patients, intrathecal drug delivery. Chapters also cover radiologic options in targeted neurolysis and ablative techniques, specifically for bone metastasis, rehabilitation to address patients’ quality of life and function, and integrative and psychological therapies. Essentials of Interventional Cancer Pain Management globally assesses and addresses patients’ needs throughout the cancer journey. Written by experts in the field, and packed with copious tables, figures, and flow charts, this book is a must-have for pain physicians, residents, and fellows.

Neuromodulation implants are currently one of the most successful techniques in the treatment of chronic pain, a condition that affects more and more patients each year, leading to reduced quality of life as well as economic losses. Neuromodulation implants for pain are a relatively new technique and are being increasingly used around the globe. However, technical training is not available for every implanter as there are relatively few centers in the world. Further, refresher courses for low-rate implanters are not available. This book fills that gap by offering an update on the best techniques currently used, providing a step-by-step guide on how to perform these procedures correctly. Based on the experiences of leading physicians in the field, it also discusses how to manage both major and minor complications. Lastly, it covers the neuromodulatory intervention techniques used to treat chronic pain in various clinical areas. As such it is a valuable resource for pain physicians as well as neurosurgeons, orthopedists and anesthetists.
