This proceedings volume collected papers presented at a recent symposium on Chiral Symmetry in Hadrons and Nuclei — the seventh in a series of international symposia — with an aim of providing a platform for discussions among the experts and an overview of the present status in the hadron and nuclear physics related to the chiral symmetry. The recent past years have seen a remarkable progress towards a unified description of nonperturbative strong interaction phenomena based on the fundamental theory of the strong interaction, Quantum ChromoDynamics, and Effective Field Theories. The topics discussed in these proceedings include: chiral and heavy-quark spin symmetry; chiral dynamics of few-body hadron systems; chiral symmetry and hadrons in a nuclear medium; chiral dynamics in nucleon-nucleon interaction and atomic nuclei; chiral symmetry in rotating nuclei; hadron structure and interactions; exotic hadrons, heavy flavor hadrons and nuclei; mesonic atoms and nuclei.

Chiral symmetry, a basic symmetry of the strong interaction and thus of QCD, plays a major role in low energy hadron physics. This workshop highlighted its importance for the understanding of hadron properties, hadron matter and recent precise lattice and experimental results. Besides, heavy quark physics was also addressed.

Chiral Dynamics 2006 is the 5th International Workshop which examines the implications and the development of an approximate low-energy solution to the QCD Lagrangian based upon Chiral Symmetry. Advances in theory and experiment are presented in 20 plenary session papers along with more than one-hundred papers, including summaries, from the three working groups. Sample Chapter(s). Part 1.1: Opening Remarks: Experimental Tests of Chiral Symmetry Breaking (311 KB). Contents: Some Recent Developments in Chiral Perturbation Theory (U-G Meiner); Recent Results from HAPPEX (R Michaels); Kaon Physics: Recent Experimental Progress (M Moulson); Recent KTeV Results on Radiative Kaon Decays (M C Ronquest); Partially Quenched CHPT Results to Two Loops (J Bijnens); Finite Volume Effects: Lattice Meets CHPT (G Schierholz); Quark Mass Dependence of LECs in the Two-Flavour Sector (M Schmid); Leading Chiral Logarithms from Unitarity, Analyticity and the Roy Equations (A Fuhrer); Power Counting in Nuclear Chiral Effective Field Theory (U van Kolck); The Challenge of Calculating Baryon-Baryon Scattering from Lattice QCD (S R Beane); Few-Body Studies at KVI (J G Messchendorp); Compton Scattering on HE-3 (D Choudhury); Lattice Discretization Errors in Chiral Effective Field Theories (B C Tiburzi); Uncertainty Bands for Chiral Extrapolations (B U Musch); and other papers. The main topic of the conference was the physics of strong interaction and the understanding of how quarks form hadrons, which are part of the atomic nucleus. The proceedings give a comprehensive overview of the present status of the physics of hadrons. Topics include: mesons, baryons, scalars, exotics, heavy quarks, theoretical concepts, hadrons in matter, and reactions. The timing of the conference was very fortunate as many new and surprising results appeared in the months before its start. The highlights were the discussions about the nature of the recently discovered arrow states.

The study of QCD in the confinement regime poses some of the most difficult problems of fundamental physics at present. The mechanism of confinement itself is not described formally, and it is hard to investigate the properties of the fundamental theory in the determination of the structures and interactions of hadronic systems. The strong coupling and the extreme non-linearity of the theory severely limit the applicability and the extension and generalization of models and methods. The area of particle/nuclear physics called Hadron Physics deals with the phenomena determined by the confinement regime of QCD.The International Workshop on Hadron Physics 98 aimed to provide a framework for the comparative evaluation of different approaches to the difficult problems of QCD, and gathered together experts who have been leading developments in hadronic physics in recent years. As a central feature of the workshop program, there were four sets of lectures: (1) “An Introduction to Effective Field Theory” (J F Donoghue); (2) “Non-perturbative QCD” (A Di Giacomo); (3) “Diffraction: Past, Present and Future” (E Predazzi); “QCD at High Temperature and Density” (T Hatsuda). These courses provided a pedagogical and updated account of the recent developments that gave support to the discussion of frontier research problems. The lecturers did very useful work in the review and description of important lines of research. The lectures are reproduced in this book, together with invited talks and contributed papers dealing with specific research problems, for the use and appreciation of a wider audience.

The study of QCD in the confinement regime poses some of the most difficult problems of fundamental physics at present. The mechanism of confinement is not yet understood, and it is hard to investigate the properties of the fundamental theory in the determination of the structures and interactions of hadronic systems. As a consequence of these difficulties, the frontier between effective and fundamental theories has been intensively investigated in the last few years, and progress has been achieved in several directions. The 'Hadron Physics' workshop gathered together experts who have been taking the lead in these developments in recent years. Four sets of lectures were presented, providing a pedagogical and updated basis that gives support to research work in frontier problems. This book puts together the main current methods in the study of the properties of hadrons. The perspective of future developments based on different approaches can then be more clearly perceived.
