The guidance in this book teaches Course #1. Before anabolic steroids started to infest the bodybuilding world, variations of Course #1 were famous, popular, and responsible for building tons of muscles. But in the 1960s, when the use of steroids became popular among competitive bodybuilders, the popularity of Course #1 began to wane. Since then, the routines most commonly promoted in the bodybuilding world have been those used by physique stars who were genetically gifted for bodybuilding and on steroids. But those routines do not work well, if at all, for most other bodybuilders. This books guidance is founded on the amazing progress that Peary Rader made - around 50 pounds of natural muscle growth following 12 years of failure on other routines. The three primary characteristics of Course #1: 1) It is very effective. 2) It is up to date. 3) It is personalized.

“In IRON NATION, Bob Whelan and Drew Israel have compiled a masterpiece text on some of the most intriguing and compelling personal stories, iron game history, and gut-wrenching training routines ever put to paper. If you truly love “hard training” without all of the frills or “pomp and circumstance” so common today, you will love IRON NATION!” --Ken Mannie, Head Strength/Conditioning Coach, Michigan State University *** "Iron Nation is one of the most educational Iron Game books ever written. Fantastic!" --Dick Conner, Powerlifting Coach, (Multiple National Champion), Strength Expert *** "Iron Nation is a fascinating and unique book that will give anyone interested in no-nonsense strength training and muscle-building many hours of enjoyable reading -- and many years of great workouts." --Brooks D. Kubik, Author of Dinosaur Training *** “IRON NATION is an excellent source of information relating to many of the top people in the fitness industry who have given thousands of hours of time and energy into making the iron game what it is today. The contributors have shared what was required ... to obtain their most positive results. My hat goes off to Bob Whelan and Drew Israel for putting this material in an easy-to-read format that is a MUST to those wanting to improve their mental or physical wellbeing.” --Bill Pearl, Former Mr. America and Mr. Universe *** "The book Iron Nation represents a tremendous singular achievement for the authors. It is an impressive and unprecedented collection of training biographies, autobiographies and anecdotes from the ENTIRE realm of progressive resistance exercise training. Such a work is long overdue." --Jan Dellinger, Author of The Dellinger Files *** "As I get older, my respect grows for the history of the Iron Game and those who were part of it. Iron Nation: Passion for Hard Training reads like a Who's Who of individuals who are an integral part of that history. Their stories are extremely informative and - as the title suggests - passionate as well as motivating and entertaining. I highly recommend this book!" --Matt Brzycki, Assistant Director of Campus Recreation & Fitness, Princeton University *** "Many congratulations to you [Bob] and Drew for getting IRON NATION done. I was thrilled that you carried through on that project--and did it so well! This is an outstanding book of training information, inspiration and motivation. The passion for hard training that oozes from many of the articles is infectious, and the accompanying real-life stories and historical reminiscences are fascinating." --Stuart McRobert, Author of Brawn and Numerous Other Iron Game Books, Publisher/Editor of Hardgainer Magazine *** "As what might be considered a kind of 'elder statesman' of the Iron Game (I have been in it and writing about it since the 1960's) I have been both appalled and delighted by that which I have seen transpire in the muscle and strength-building field over the decades. The size-mania, living in the gym, cosmetic-oriented 'appearance training', and of course the damn steroid drug scourge, has appalled me. The work of men like Bob Whelan and Drew Israel, and the occasional literary gems that evolve as a result of the work of these men — such as this new book, IRON NATION, has delighted me. There are few activities as rewarding — mentally, physically, and spiritually — as sensible progressive resistance (barbell/dumbell and similar types of) exercise. And we who love this activity and who wish to see it continue to enrich those seekers-after-personal-strength-and-excellence always celebrate a quality literary contribution to our beloved field. We recommend it highly.”--Bradley J. Steiner, World Famous Weight Training & Martial Arts Writer *** Visit our website and see our many books at PhysicalCultureBooks.com

Autobiography of Michigan’s controversial governor from the Upper Peninsula. Originally published in 1919, The Iron Hunter is the autobiography of one of Michigan's most influential and flamboyant historical figures: the reporter, publisher, explorer, politician, and twenty-seventh governor of Michigan, Chase Salmon Osborn (1860-1949). Making unprecedented use of the automobile in his 1910 campaign, Osborn ran a memorable campaign that was followed by an even more remarkable term as governor. In two years he eliminated Michigan's deficit, ended corruption, and produced the state's first workmen's compensation law and a reform of the electoral process. His autobiography reflects the energy and enthusiasm of a reformer inspired by the Progressive Movement, but it also reveals the poetic spirit of an adventurer who fell in love with Michigan's Upper Peninsula after traveling the world.

A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the master of the novel of international intrigue comes a riveting new book as timely and unsettling as tomorrow's headlines. It is summer 1999 in Russia, a country on the threshold of anarchy. An interim president sits powerless in Moscow as his nation is wracked by famine and inflation, crime and corruption, and seething hordes of the unemployed roam the streets. For the West, Russia is a basket case. But for Igor Komarov, one-time army sergeant who has risen to leadership of the right-wing UPF party, the chaos is made to order. As he waits in the wings for the presidential election of January 2000, his striking voice rings out over the airwaves offering the roiling masses hope at last—not only for law, order, and prosperity, but for restoring the lost greatness of their land. Who is this man with the golden tongue who is so quickly becoming the promise of a Russia reborn? A document stolen from party headquarters and smuggled to Washington and London sends nightmare chills through those who remember the past, for this Black Manifesto is pure Mein Kampf in a country with frightening parallels to the Germany of the Weimar Republic. Officially the West can do nothing, but in secret a group of elder statesmen sends the only person who can expose the truth about Komarov into the heart of the inferno. Jason Monk, ex-CIA and "the best damn agent-runner we ever had," had sworn he would never return to Moscow, but one name changes his mind. Colonel Anatoli Grishin, the KGB officer who tortured and murdered four of Monk's agents after they had been betrayed by Aldrich Ames, is now Komarov's head of security. Monk has a dual mission: to stop Komarov, whatever it takes, and to prepare the way for an icon worthy of the Russian people. But he has a personal mission as well: to settle the final score with Grishin. To do this he must stay alive--and the forces allied against him are ruthless, the time frighteningly short. . . . Praise for Icon “Vintage Forsyth, intricate, exact and gripping.”—The New York Times Book Review “Another strong performance by a writer who knows exactly what he's about, and who here catalyzes narrative with another memorable protagonist, the stealthy and daring Monk.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review) “One of his best works for a long time, which provides an all-too-real look at a chilling new millennium.”—The Sunday Times, London

I'm Stuart McRobert. For 40-plus years I battled with attitudes, beliefs and behaviors that are commonly labeled as symptoms of three psychological disorders--muscle dysmorphia, orthorexia, and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD). The consequences were grave, and drove me to consider suicide. But I survived, and eventually thrived, and was finally at peace with myself and my life. In this book I explain my success story and an effective strategy for self-care. You may be able to have similar success if you're currently battling with psychological problems--especially if they are to do with your body, eating, perfectionism, or workaholism. My struggles started in earnest when I was 15 years old, in 1973. They had profoundly negative effects on my life. I wasn't dealing with personality quirks. The severity of my problems increased through the 1970s and '80s--from my early teens through my twenties. But I never thought there may be something wrong with my mental health. That I considered suicide during the 1990s and early 2000s should have made me seek help. But I thought seeking help was weakness. I needed to "man up," "pull myself together," and "get a sense of perspective." Those shame-based clich s were first inflicted on me during my upbringing, but they didn't help. There were, however, tremendously good things happening in my life during the decades of mental torment. Here are some of the riches that couldn't make me happy: Since the 1980s I've lived on a Mediterranean island that has a wonderful climate. I have a supportive wife and two children. We own a lovely home. And I work for myself from home and have had success as a writer and a publisher. The scrambling of my brain during the 40-plus years before I started therapy "stole my happiness." Finally, in September 2015, when I was 56 years old, I admitted something was profoundly wrong with me. My initial investigation--through the mainstream or medical model--revealed I'd been mentally ill since I was a teenager. I then took responsibility for my mental health problems and their consequences. My therapy started in January 2016. It gave me an alternative perspective on my so-called mental illness. That perspective is a non-medical model, to use my therapist's term. Many millions of people are trapped by mental torment. The physical effects vary, and can devastate the sufferers, those close to them, and society. Countless people self-medicate through drugs (including alcohol and nicotine), unhealthy food, work, or other addictive behaviors. Many sufferers attempt suicide, and some succeed. With the right therapy, people with mental health problems can cope and lead rewarding lives. The therapy I'm referring to has nothing to do with psychiatric drugs and institutions. I experienced it myself with great success. It started through talk therapy with a properly trained and licensed therapist. This book includes my session notes--a real-life case history. After I finished my therapy sessions, my progress continued through what I learned from some life-changing books, which I also explain. What I reveal in this book will help others with their self-therapy.
