The great Florentine Protestant reformer Peter Martyr Vermigli (1499-1562) made a unique contribution to the scriptural hermeneutics of the Renaissance and Reformation, where classical theories of interpretation derived from Patristic and Scholastic sources engaged with new methods drawn from Humanism and Hebraism. Vermigli was one of the pioneers of the sixteenth century in acknowledging and harnessing the biblical scholarship of the medieval Rabbis. His eminence in the Catholic Church in Italy (until 1542) was followed by an equally distinguished career as theologian and exegete in Protestant Europe where he was professor successively in Strasbourg, Oxford, and finally in Zurich. The Companion consists of 24 essays divided among five themes addressing Vermigli s international career, hermeneutical method, biblical commentaries, major theological topics, and his later influence. Contributors include: Scott Amos, Michael Baumann, Jon Balserak, Luca Baschera, Maurice Boutin, Emidio Campi, John Patrick Donnelly SJ, Max Engammare, Gerald Hobbs, Frank James III, Gary Jenkins, Robert Kingdon, Torrance Kirby, William Klempa, Joseph McLelland, Charlotte Methuen, Christian Moser, David Neelands, Peter Opitz, Herman Selderhuis, Daniel Shute, David Wright, and Jason Zuidema.

The Church of England during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries is usually described as forming either a Calvinist consensus or an Anglican middle way steeped in an ancient catholicity. Debating Perseverance sheds light on the influence of both the early church and the Reformed churches on the church by surveying debates on perseverance of the saints in which readings of Augustine were involved. It begins with a reassessment of the Lambeth Articles (1595) and the heated Cambridge debates in which they were forged, demonstrating that perseverance played a critical role. It then investigates the failed attempt of the British delegation to the Synod of Dort to achieve solidarity with the international Reformed community on perseverance in a way that was also respectful of minority opinions. The study returns to English soil to evaluate the supposedly Arminian Richard Montagu and the turmoil he caused by challenging the Reformed consensus and the Synod of Dort. It finishes by surveying a Puritan debate that occurred following England's civil war, when the pro-Dort party had triumphed. Jay T. Collier's study uncovers competing readings of Augustine on perseverance within the Reformed tradition-one favoring the perseverance of the saints and the other denying it. Rather than emphasizing one source of England's religious identity to the neglect of another, this study recognizes England's struggles with perseverance as emblematic of its troubled pursuit of a Reformed and ancient catholicity.

This study describes the origins of early Reformed confessional development using the example of those congregations of religious refugees most heavily influenced by John Laski: the congregation at Emden and the Dutch and French Strangers’ Churches in London. At its center are questions about the congregation as the location of ecclesiology. The outlines of Laski’s theology--which viewed the congregation as the communion of the body of Christ--are described in comparison to the approaches of other Reformers and in relationship to daily reality in the second half of the sixteenth century. Working from a rich base of source materials, the author discusses the development of teachings on church offices and the practice of church discipline, thus illuminating the self-understanding of the three congregations. Becker shows how reciprocal influences and attempts to conform led to the unification of doctrine and community life within these congregations.

Cranmer in Context is a book of edited extracts from the writings of the Tudor primate who was born five hundred years ago, on 2 July 1489. His writings were once readily available, but are now hard to find. A quincentenary celebration ought certainly to prompt a wider public to examine at least something of Cranmer's legacy; and this volume is published to set the spotlight on the remarkable contribution he made to sixteenth-century national politics and piety. As an archbishop of the Reformation, Thomas Cranmer was one of those who molded the English Church when Henry VIII's vision of the 'imperial kingship' and independence determined on schism with Rome. Cranmer than had the task of presiding over a Church in transition -- revising services, re-formulating doctrine, and re-drafting law. In pastoralmMinistry he afforded both faithful and not-so-faithful reasonable diversity of worship within a single comprehensive Church. These pages provide an introduction to the life and work of a significant scholar-priest. His active ministry in high places sets him in the front rank of reform in Tudor England, just as the liturgical grasp that composed the Books of Common Prayer (1549 and 1552) earns its author a literary reputation that is well-nigh Shakespearean. High claims perhaps, but readily substantiated in this book, particularly in the wide range of extracts it contains from the correspondence, controversies, treatises and prayers of the sensitive soul whose genius made enduring virtue from temporary compromise. - Preface.
