Indonesia is one of the coutnries where exciting art is still waiting to be discovered. Over the past ten years, a growing number of group exhibitions and survey shows have presented Indonesian art. What has been sorely lacking is a book about the country's best-known artists. "Sip!--Indonesian Art Today" introduces readers to 16 established and young artists, presenting each of them with recent works. Farah Wardani, director of the Indonesian Visual Art Archive, Yogyakarta, has compiled brief texts shedding light on the artist's conceptions. Biographical information, exhibition histories, bibliographies, and portraits of the artists complement the illustrations. The curator Enin Supriyanto, a leading expert on the Indonesian art scene, has contributed an essay examinging the most recent developments in Indonesian art, tying them back to the art history of the past forty years and mapping them to the transformations in Indonesian society and politics during the same period. A timeline extending from the 1970s to the present additionally visualizes the most important moments in art, in Indonesia and abroad, making the book an indispensable compendium for collectors and curators, students of art and everyone who is interested.

Contemporary Japanese artist Motoi Yamamoto is known for working with salt--often in the form of temporary, intricate, large-scale installations--and he has created acclaimed projects around the world. Return to the Sea is the first book to take measure of Yamamoto's engagement with salt installations since he began making them in 1994. Yamamoto began to create art out of salt while mourning the death of his sister, out of an effort to preserve his memories. He views his installations as exercises that are at once futile yet necessary to his healing. An important aspect of the installation is the dismantling of his work at the end of each show and delivering the salt back to water, usually in collaboration with the public.

A retrospective on the life and art of this renowned Cuban-American artist, acclaimed for his refined and thought-provoking paintings with fantastical, Surrealist overtones. One of the most important contemporary painters to emerge from Latin America, Julio Larraz (b. 1944, Havana) creates powerful, dreamlike paintings that reflect the influence of painters from Velázquez to Sargent and Hopper, and Surrealist artists like Dalí and Magritte. A unique visionary, Larraz produces work that has been described by some as mind-bending and playful, using a refreshingly wide range of subjects from still life to Cuban cultural imagery, such as bullfights, men in white linen suits, and maritime scenes. He reveals imaginary worlds, with deeply satirical, ambiguous, and multilayered themes, in which he often alludes to political corruption, class structure, and human foibles. This is the largest and most comprehensive book to date, with 200 paintings, 50 works on paper, and 10 sculptures, ranging from the 1960s to the present, accompanied by an essay by David Ebony that situates Larraz’s work within the Latin American painting tradition.

This monograph, published to accompany Housley s solo exhibition of paintings at the Reg Vardy Gallery, 2005, is the result of a year-long residency at Durham Cathedral. Painting, for Housley, is a "dumb muse": a medium which, whilst only able to offer still, silent and hand-made single images, is also able to offer the most complex, nuanced and double-edged forms of visual experience. Working on an intimate scale, Housley's images elicit an unlikely poignancy and tenderness from subject matter that might initially seem to offer slight returns.
