In this monograph the writer has tried to show how the Greek jewellery motifs were imported into India, which have been discovered in the jewellery found in Taxila and other border towns where Alexander had allowed his soldiers to settle down. Among these soldiers were goldsmiths who just manufactured jewellery on Greek patterns but later influenced by Indian motifs began to mix these with Greek ones. This Indo - Greek jewellery found a ready market among the Indo - Greeks who inhabited these towns. The writer has dealt with the jewellery found under different chapters entitled the jewellery for the head, ears, neck, arms, wrist etc. This analytical thesis is of interest of all Indologists and is specially useful for scholars studying Indian jewellery and ornaments of the first century A.D. What are the origins of the imagery and designs on common jewelry and portable artwork between late antiquity and the Middle Ages? Poiesis brings together archaeological finds, ancient texts and inscriptions, recent scholarly analysis, and the expertise of modern craftsmen to investigate every known facet of Athens' manufacturing activities. Despite the fact that Athenians consumed great quantities of manufactured goods, and around half of the residents of classical Athens can be shown to have been dependent for survival on manufacturing in some form, the subject has been almost completely neglected by historians. The book draws on the analytical techniques of contemporary business economics--supply and demand, competition theory, and risk-return analysis--to explain events and choices. Manufacturing operations are classified in an original framework that explains why certain segments were suited to the sole craftsman and others to teams of slaves, and deduces earnings potential based upon barriers to entry and competitive differentiation. The result is a new and refreshing angle on how Athenian society operated that complements political, military, and literary perspectives, with important and often surprising implications. Julian Romane examines the military events behind the emergence of the Sui and Tang dynasties in the period 581-626 AD. Narrating the campaigns and battles, he analyses in detail the strategy and tactics employed, a central theme being the collision of the steppe cavalry with Chinese infantry armies.By the fourth century AD, horse nomads had seized northern China. Conflict with these Turkic interlopers continued throughout the 5th and most of the 6th century. The emergence of the Sui dynasty (581-618) brought some progress but internal weakness led to their rapid collapse. The succeeding House of Tang, however, provided the necessary stability and leadership to underpin military success. This was largely the achievement of Li Shimin, who later became the second Tang Emperor. By the start of Li Shimins reign as Emperor Tang Taizong, effective military organizations had been developed and China reunified. His military campaigns are examples of tactical and strategic virtuosity that demonstrate the application of the distinctive Chinese way of war expounded in Chinese military manuals, including Li Shimins own writings.
