Samuel Thomas Gill, or STG as he was universally known, was Australia’s most significant and popular artist of the mid-nineteenth century. For his contemporaries he epitomised ‘Marvellous Melbourne’ basking in the glow of the gold rushes. He worked in South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales and left some of the most memorable images of urban and rural life in colonial Australia. A passionate defender of Indigenous Australians and of the environment, Gill in his art celebrated the emerging quintessential Australian character. This is the first major comprehensive book to be devoted to Gill and presents a radical reassessment of one of the most important figures in Australian colonial art and reproduces, in some instances for the first time, some of the most startling images from nineteenth-century Australian art. There will be an exhibition of S.T. Gill’s work at the State Library of Victoria in July 2015 and at the National Library of Australia in June 2016, plus smaller shows in regional Victorian galleries. In association with the State Library of Victoria.

Using photographs from the National Library's collection, Ennis introduces us to Australia from the 1840's to the present as we have never seen it before - at peace and at war, and in all its splendour and ordinary dailiness, as seen through the cameras of Charles Bayliss, Samuel Sweet, Peta Hill and many others. Large format.

Empires of Vision brings together pieces by some of the most influential scholars working at the intersection of visual culture studies and the history of European imperialism. The essays and excerpts focus on the paintings, maps, geographical surveys, postcards, photographs, and other media that comprise the visual milieu of colonization, struggles for decolonization, and the lingering effects of empire. Taken together, they demonstrate that an appreciation of the role of visual experience is necessary for understanding the functioning of hegemonic imperial power and the ways that the colonized subjects spoke, and looked, back at their imperial rulers. Empires of Vision also makes a vital point about the complexity of image culture in the modern world: We must comprehend how regimes of visuality emerged globally, not only in the metropole but also in relation to the putative margins of a world that increasingly came to question the very distinction between center and periphery.
