An addictive fantasy romance from TikTok sensation Piper CJ, now newly revised and edited. Two orphans grow into powerful young women as they face countless threats to find their way back to each other. Farleigh is just an orphanage. At least, that's what the church would have the people believe, but beautiful orphans Nox and fae-touched Amaris know better. They are commodities for sale, available for purchase by the highest bidder. So when the madame of a notorious brothel in a far-off city offers a king's ransom to purchase Amaris, Nox ends up taking her place — while Amaris is drawn away to the mountains, home of mysterious assassins. Even as they take up new lives and identities, Nox and Amaris never forget one thing: they will stop at nothing to reunite. But the threat of war looms overhead, and the two are inevitably swept into a conflict between human and fae, magic and mundane. With strange new alliances, untested powers, and a bond that neither time nor distance could possibly break, the fate of the realms lies in the hands of two orphans — and the love they hold for each other.

The present book is based on the experience of the author. The experience is mainly the result of years of research, of consulting work, and in participation in policy decision making in many felds, most, but not all, related to outdoor lighting. To some degree, the book represents the preference of the author. The selection of the subjects is based on more than 50 years of experience of what is desirable to know for persons engaged in scientifc research or practical application in the felds of lighting and vision. The subjects deal with a number of fundamental aspects. The theorists must have them at their fngertips, whereas the practical engineers may assume them as known in their daily work. The selection of subjects is based in part by the questions that came to the author over the years, but even more by the preference of the author himself. In this respect, it is a personal book. Thus, it should be stressed that the book is not a ‘handbook’ or even a ‘textbook’; many subjects that commonly are treated in such books are not included here. Not because they lack importance, but because the author feels that they are adequately treated elsewhere. Some relevant works are mentioned in the References. Over the years, the author has been engaged in giving courses on vision and lighting, lately more in particular on Masterclasses on a post-graduate or post-doctorate level.

If science, art and religion are all open pathways when utilized properly, we attempt, in this issue, to discover what true art consists of. “Ask the practitioner and inquire of the adept,” is the recourse we have resorted to herein. Music, poetry, dance, painting and film, described in these pages, are duly five sacred constituents of the infinite expanse of Advaitic experience. We have heard, seen, possibly have even known what these sacred forms have suffered at the hands of people with a desire for fame, a yen for pleasure, and the singular search for wealth that occludes and excludes all other considerations. The sweet, exalted and transporting presence of God simply disappears from the medium and atmosphere which covets such fugacious, spurious and soporific attainments. Led on by “artists” who support a mere masquerade of true attainment, beings rush to the affluent and the popular for their inner fulfillment, scarcely ever experiencing the superlative presence of divinity residing in pure artistic expression. Thus, the authentic luminaries of art, science and religion seldom get recognized by the masses, and the masses then have little recourse and access to the more profound insights and inspirations of the various refined fields. How is music made sacred? Is it sacred already? Is all dance divine? Does all poetry reflect the divine muse within? Do all works of art speak of the highest realization? Does it really matter, or is all realization, like beauty, in “the eye of the beholder?” Possibly some of these questions may find answers in the following pages. But if not, suffice to say that where the medium is purified — where a lustral regimen has been adhered to — there, spiritualized expression will reach its zenith. When sensitive artists, seeking the highest, place their gifts and talents in action and offer the fruits of such before the world, they must first and necessarily have subjected them to purification and intensification. Any instrument, whether it be a metal tube or a fleshy tube, a wooden box with strings or a metal box containing film, a tome of writings, a paintbrush, or the human body, is always under the control of consciousness. Like different conditions of water — some fit for drinking, some for swimming, some for washing dishes and some only for carrying waste — the consciousness of human minds is also pure or impure, as the case may be. In artistic endeavor, then, as in spiritual practice, purification of what is limited or impure renders the medium fit to emanate the truth or essence of any given expression, such as inspired choreography, a masterpiece on canvas, an original composition, a unique film, or a work of literary genius — all which have the ability to transform lives. So here is the acid test with regards to true artforms, at least for the discriminating person. As is consistent with all modes of existence — with work, dreams, visions, relative experiences of all types — if they help reveal the divine essence in human nature and assist human character by way of positive accretion, then they can be said to be real, authentic, and ultimately meaningful. Otherwise, too much distraction and wasted energy plague them, as well as their host, all amounting to “vanity and vexation of human spirit."

Light Pollution Handbook

Light Pollution Handbook
Author: Kohei Narisada
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media

Release: 2013-06-05
Genre: Science
ISBN: 1402026668

Constituting the first holistic overview including practical remedies, this handbook provides the background needed by anyone grappling with the complex issue of outdoor lighting and its effects. It describes not only the problems that astronomers and other night sky observers face in reducing the problems of information loss due to light pollution, as well as the problems lighting technologists face in optimising outdoor lighting installations that cause little or no light pollution. The first part is directed to decision makers and managers of outdoor space and covers the areas of general interest, culminating in recommendations to reduce the impact of light pollution. The second part is directed primarily to scientists and engineers, as a support to the design and maintenance of outdoor lighting installations, with special reference to astronomical observations. Elaborating issues from the first part, these contributions include examples that refer to specific outdoor lighting projects and to more general policy and educational measures. Written for designers of lighting equipment and managers of astronomical observatories, but also aimed at the authorities and decision makers responsible for the organization and maintenance of the public space, it will serve a good purpose in graduate or postgraduate curricula for scientists, engineers, economists and law students. This handbook fills the gap that exists between astronomical textbooks, engineering texts and popular brochures about light pollution.
