'A stunning romantic comedy ... fun, warm and perceptive' Jessie Stephens Elodie Cheesman's joyous debut is a modern take on the age-old decision between following your head or your heart in the search for love. There's an algorithm for everything else, so why not love? When 24-year-old lawyer Romy learns that she is at her 'optimal stopping point' (the mathematically designated point at which one should select the next 'best person' who comes along in order to have the best chance at happily ever after), she knows it's time to get serious about her love life. Ruthlessly rational, with a belief in data over destiny, Romy knows that reliability and consistency are dependable options, while passion and lust are transitory and only bring pain and disillusionment. That's why sensible Hans the engineer is the right choice, as opposed to graphic designer James who exhibits the kind of behaviour that has got her into trouble before. Isn't he? LONGLISTED FOR THE AUSTRALIAN BOOK DESIGN AWARDS 2022 BEST DESIGNED COMMERCIAL FICTION COVER Praise for Love, in Theory 'Cheesman plays with love's biggest questions, like: Is finding a life partner chaos? Or could there be an underlying logic? A hopeful, feel-good read, Love, in Theory perfectly captures the beauty - and occasional horror - of dating in the modern age.' - Jessie Stephens, author of Heartsick

"This book takes you on a photographic voyage through my life so far." –Keegan Allen Keegan Allen is currently known to fans of the ABC Family hit television series, Pretty Little Liars. He has also appeared in numerous independent films and made his New York Stage debut in the acclaimed MCC production of Small Engine Repair. Keegan was given his first camera at age nine, and began a lifelong study and pursuit of photography. life.love.beauty is a selection of photographs taken since his childhood. It's a photo journey through the life of an intensely creative soul whose expression finds various forms: in acting, in poems and stories, lyrics and music, but above all in photography. This book's content resonates in the commonality we all share on our own journeys while unveiling an inside look into a world that very few experience. Organized into three broad groups—life, love, and beauty—the book ranges over the public and private side of Keegan Allen and his world. A child of Hollywood, whose father was also an actor and his mother a painter, Keegan roams freely through that realm, photographing his fellow actors on set, behind the scenes; and recording the amazed, gleeful, sometimes weeping fans that flock to his television and career related events. Allen also has an eye for the anonymous and the unexpected: the woman gazing dreamily from the balcony of a run-down hotel; the rifle-toting dog walker who seems to have emerged from the 19th century; the performers and denizens of Venice Beach and also the streets of New York, some of them chasing the dream of fame, others having long-since abandoned it; the little boy amid in the crowd in an enormous airport; portraits of lovers kissing on subways, in parks, and on the streets. Traveling from California to New York to Paris and back, as well as through the American west, he finds beauty in both urban and rural places: from large-scale landscapes to glimpses of light transforming what it touches. Keegan's poems, stories, captions and musings, song lyrics, and journal pages complement the photographs on this journey. He provides an account of growing up just off the Sunset Strip, coming into his own as an actor/artist, dealing with public recognition while maintaining a very private life, falling in and out of love, and acknowledging the influence of his family, friends, fans, and loved ones. life.love.beauty is an unusually intimate and revealing book: a delight for anyone who values photography, and a gift for the many fans who already follow Keegan's career. Keegan's real passion comes through in both his photographs and candid story telling in this unique photo-journal.

Sure to be a key resource for decades to come, In Search of the Sacred: A Conversation with Seyyed Hossein Nasr on His Life and Thought illuminates Nasr's experiences and shares his insights on topics from religion and philosophy to science and the arts. Based on a series of interviews, the book combines traditional autobiography with an exploration of the intellectual and spiritual trajectories of the author's thought during key periods of his life. Brought together after tragedy, Edward Wyllie and Dora Williams find the true beauty of love in this poignant and thrilling historical romance set in 1800 Boston and New Hampshire. In an unlikely place for new beginnings, a cemetery, Edward and Dora meet for the first time. But in that forlorn place, the beauty of love blossoms. Edward is still struggling with guilt over the death of his family more than a year ago-a guilt so great he's unable to even look at his childrens' gravestones. As their friendship grows, Dora forces Edward to confront the truth-their deaths were not his fault. And Edward gives Dora, a young Boston widow, a chance to seize love and learn the meaning of passion. But first, they must put their whirlwind courtship on hold as Edward and Dora become embroiled in a shocking family crisis. Edward's brother Captain Sam Wyllie and his wife Catherine, a friend of Dora's since childhood, have come from their home in Kentucky to Boston to confront Catherine's wealthy father Remington Forbes. When Sam and Catherine arrive, both of Catherine's upper-crust parents reject her rugged frontier husband Sam and, heartlessly, their beautiful infant grandson Rory. A powerful businessman, obsessed with wealth, Forbes is desperate to gain control of Sam's property, Wyllie Mountain in New Hampshire. The mountain's abundant and newly discovered gold offers Forbes a chance to escape his insurmountable financial debt. Forbes will stop at nothing and is willing to have Sam murdered to get the gold. By killing Sam, he'll also regain control of the fortune his daughter inherited from her grandfather. Dora resolves to try to help Catherine. She challenges Mr. and Mrs. Forbes to measure themselves not by their wealth and social status, but by how much love they are willing to give others. As hostilities mount, Edward is determined to keep Sam safe from Forbes and his unscrupulous men. But danger awaits on Wyllie Mountain and events quickly spin out of Edward's control. What do you do when the enemy is a family member who will do anything to get what he wants? This extraordinary historical romance, teeming with intrigue and cliff-edge tension, is the story of a love that was meant to be. And the book's timeless messages of family and loyalty are both raw and honest. As in Wiley's other novels, the author's complex characters come alive and are joined by a memorable ensemble of friends and family. As Wiley skillfully unravels this compelling tale, she includes rich historical elements to create The Beauty of Love's vivid colonial world. But in a slight variation of style for this popular author, Wiley blends the feel of a modern mystery thriller with the romance of a moving love story to create a highly engaging page-turner.Inspired by history, Wiley's books may all be read independently, including her highly-acclaimed debut novel WILDERNESS TRAIL OF LOVE, the first in her American Wilderness Series. The novels of this Readers' Favorite Gold Medal winning author are enjoyed worldwide by readers of historical romance, westerns, and classic American adventures.

Reza Shah Pahlavi introduced policies that altered the lives of Iranian women radically. For the first time, women entered into modern sectors of the economy, family laws were modified, the unveiling was enforced, and the government established public coeducational primary schools. The rapid development of women’s schools, in spite of bitter clerical objection, was one of the primary means for women’s awakening in this period. The mid-1930s also saw the opening of higher education to women and enrollment of over seventy female students in 1936–37 at the University of Tehran. Reflecting on this radical change in the infrastructure of Iran’s social scene, Ali Dashti wrote his collections of short stories and essays—Fetneh, Jadoo, Hindu, and Sayeh—in which he analyzed the attitudes of upper-class women caught between the traditional and modern Europeanized societies of Tehran. These books are testaments to the courage of Ali Dashti to document the situation in Iranian society so accurately. With his assertive voice, he underlined the short stories with the actual political and social changes in Iran. Dashti’s humanistic ideas and his regard and high expectations for the human race, especially for women, are beyond time and place. The quality debates on the subject of human rights and gender equality presented in his short stories, written about a century ago in Iran, are only recently surfacing in the Western world.

Contemporary technical architectural drawings, in establishing a direct relationship between the drawing and its object, tend to privilege the visible physical world at the expense of the invisible intangible ideas and concepts, including that of the designer’s imagination. As a result, drawing may become a utilitarian tool for documentation, devoid of any meaningful value in terms of a kind of knowledge that could potentially link the visible and invisible. This book argues that design drawings should be recognized as intermediaries, mediating between the world of ideas and the world of things, spanning the intangible and tangible. The notion of the 'Imaginal' as an intermediary between the invisible and visible is discussed, showing how architectural drawings lend themselves to this notion by performing as creative agents contributing not only to the physical world but also penetrating the realm of concepts. The book argues that this 'in-between' quality to architectural drawing is essential and that it is critical to perceive drawings as subtle bodies that hold physical attributes (for example, form, proportion, color), highly evocative, yet with no matter. Focusing on Islamic geometric architectural drawings, both historical and contemporary, it draws on key philosophical and conceptual notions of imagination from the Islamic tradition as these relate to the creative act. In doing so, this book not only makes important insights into the design process and act of architectural representation, but more broadly it adds to debates on philosophies of the imagination, linking both Western and Islamic traditions.

Striving only for material wealth is incompatible with our latent personal longing for love and recognition. Simons discourse identifies a remedy available to all of us, that of adopting an attitude of love, and then putting that love into action in whatever way is open to each of us. We admire and appreciate those among us who overcome the natural impulse toward individual comfort. Currently, the organization of Doctors Without Borders, people who have eschewed financial gain and devoted themselves to bringing medical care to others in disease-ridden and war-torn areas, accepting danger and poor living conditions as they do so, is an example. Two individuals, also, come to mind. The late Mother Theresa practiced love as few in history have done, and remained an outspoken advocate for the poor and oppressed throughout her life. Canadian Stephen Lewis, who works tirelessly for the people of Africa who suffer the consequences of the AIDS epidemic is another such person. But, few of us are able to enact such extreme values. We have our familial commitments, our societal demands, our need to ensure that we ourselves will not become a drain to others, and these hold us in a sense of impotent guilt and envy. The answer? Start small, with ourselves. Live in and through an attitude of love. Become channels through which Universal Love can flow toward our families, our neighbors, our friends, and our fellow people. Marnie Atkinson, M.A. Ed.
