Reza Shah Pahlavi introduced policies that altered the lives of Iranian women radically. For the first time, women entered into modern sectors of the economy, family laws were modified, the unveiling was enforced, and the government established public coeducational primary schools. The rapid development of women’s schools, in spite of bitter clerical objection, was one of the primary means for women’s awakening in this period. The mid-1930s also saw the opening of higher education to women and enrollment of over seventy female students in 1936–37 at the University of Tehran. Reflecting on this radical change in the infrastructure of Iran’s social scene, Ali Dashti wrote his collections of short stories and essays—Fetneh, Jadoo, Hindu, and Sayeh—in which he analyzed the attitudes of upper-class women caught between the traditional and modern Europeanized societies of Tehran. Contemporary technical architectural drawings, in establishing a direct relationship between the drawing and its object, tend to privilege the visible physical world at the expense of the invisible intangible ideas and concepts, including that of the designer’s imagination. As a result, drawing may become a utilitarian tool for documentation, devoid of any meaningful value in terms of a kind of knowledge that could potentially link the visible and invisible. This book argues that design drawings should be recognized as intermediaries, mediating between the world of ideas and the world of things, spanning the intangible and tangible. The notion of the 'Imaginal' as an intermediary between the invisible and visible is discussed, showing how architectural drawings lend themselves to this notion by performing as creative agents contributing not only to the physical world but also penetrating the realm of concepts. The book argues that this 'in-between' quality to architectural drawing is essential and that it is critical to perceive drawings as subtle bodies that hold physical attributes (for example, form, proportion, color), highly evocative, yet with no matter. Focusing on Islamic geometric architectural drawings, both historical and contemporary, it draws on key philosophical and conceptual notions of imagination from the Islamic tradition as these relate to the creative act. In doing so, this book not only makes important insights into the design process and act of architectural representation, but more broadly it adds to debates on philosophies of the imagination, linking both Western and Islamic traditions.

Striving only for material wealth is incompatible with our latent personal longing for love and recognition. Simons discourse identifies a remedy available to all of us, that of adopting an attitude of love, and then putting that love into action in whatever way is open to each of us. We admire and appreciate those among us who overcome the natural impulse toward individual comfort. Currently, the organization of Doctors Without Borders, people who have eschewed financial gain and devoted themselves to bringing medical care to others in disease-ridden and war-torn areas, accepting danger and poor living conditions as they do so, is an example. Two individuals, also, come to mind. The late Mother Theresa practiced love as few in history have done, and remained an outspoken advocate for the poor and oppressed throughout her life. Canadian Stephen Lewis, who works tirelessly for the people of Africa who suffer the consequences of the AIDS epidemic is another such person. But, few of us are able to enact such extreme values. We have our familial commitments, our societal demands, our need to ensure that we ourselves will not become a drain to others, and these hold us in a sense of impotent guilt and envy. The answer? Start small, with ourselves. Live in and through an attitude of love. Become channels through which Universal Love can flow toward our families, our neighbors, our friends, and our fellow people.
