Collected primarily in metropolitan New York and Philadelphia during the classic era of black street poetry (i.e., during the late 1960s and early 1970s) these raps, signifyings, toasts, boasts, jokes and children's rhymes will delight general readers as well as scholars. Ranging from the simple rhymes that accompany children's games to verbally inventive insults and the epic exploits of traditional characters like Shine and Stagger Lee, these texts sound the deep rivers of culture, echoing two continents. Onwuchekwa Jemie's introductory essay situates them in a globally pan-African context and relates them to more recent forms of oral culture such as rap and spoken word.

Domestic Violence is a serious issue when dealing with the hands of your abuser. Domestic Violence is a violent or aggressive behavior within the home, church or workplace, typically involving the violent abuse of a spouse or partner. Domestic Violence is also willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault, and/ or other abusive behavior as part of a systematic pattern of power and control perpetrated by one intimate partner against another. I was in an abusive relationship with my abuser for a long period of time. I suffer a lot pain and heartache in the hands of my abuser. He had me brainwashed. He can cheat on me with whomever he wanted too, but I dare not question him why. My abuser told me, “I better not tell anyone and if you do I’ll kill you” Now that stuck with me for a long time. I never told anyone of what he had did to me. I knew I had to fi ght back in order for me to get away from him. None of that worked out for me. He always said the right words to win me back. Yes, I loved him and I didn’t want to see him in jail. I kept everything a secret from my family. I pray that if you are in an abusive relationship to get out and seek help. Yes, he may tell you that he won’t do it again but is it worth losing your LIFE? He’s going to tell you all the good words you love to hear, but is your heart worth losing a BEAT? Don’t be afraid to seek help. It’s up to you to get the help. If you know someone you can trust, please tell them. Always keep a journal of what is going on between you and your abuser. I AM A SURVIVOR of DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. I survive the hands of my abuser. To all women’s around the world who is going through an abusive relationship, there is joy on the other side. God will be there in the midst of your storm. May God bless you all!!!!!!!!! Ms. Survivor

The empowering, inspiring, patriarchy-smashing first book by the TikTok and Spotify star Drew Afualo. Drew Afualo is best known as the internet’s “Crusader for Women” and is at the head of a new generation of entertainment’s rising stars. Loud is part manual, part manifesto, and part memoir. It makes it clear that behind her fearsome laugh is a mission and a life philosophy, a strategy for self-confidence from the inside out, and a pathway to once and for all remove men from the center of how women and femmes think about themselves. Afualo has amassed more than nine million followers across her social platforms. When she first started creating content in 2020, she realized that men on Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, and other apps were creating sexist content aimed at disparaging women, and also containing rampant fatphobia, racism, and other forms of bigotry, with very real-life consequences. It didn’t take long for her to step into the role of unofficial watchdog for misogyny, and her signature laugh is now recognized as a feminist call to arms, a summoning cry to rid the internet (and our hearts, minds, and lives) of “terrible men” and create a space to fight outdated patriarchal ideals.

Talking about race and sports almost always leads to trouble. Rush Limbaugh's stint as an NFL commentator came to an abrupt end when he made some off-handed comments about the Philadelphia Eagles' black quarterback, Donovan McNabb. Ask a simple question along these lines - 'Why do African Americans dominate the NBA?' - and watch the sparks fly. It is precisely this flashpoint that the contributors to this volume seek to explore. Professional and amateur sports wield a tremendous amount of cultural power in the United States and around the world, and racial, ethnic, and national identities are often played out through them. In the Game collects essays by top thinkers on race that survey this treacherous terrain. They engage fascinating topics like race and cricket in the West Indies, how black culture shaped the NFL in the 1970s, the famed black-on-white Cooney/Holmes boxing bout, and American Indian mascots for sports teams.

America I AM: The African American Imprint, a national traveling museum exhibition, was conceived by award-winning broadcaster and bestselling author Tavis Smiley as a one-of-a-kind multi-media experience that chronicles the distinct history of African Americans. This beautifully conceived companion volume addresses the central theme of the exhibition, posed by W. E. B. Du Bois: "Would America have been America without her Negro people?" Through exceptional photographic images and penetrating words, America I AM Legends captures the dynamism of 78 legendary African Americans, highlighting the indelible imprint each has made on the United States and the world. A statement illuminating a unique aspect of each iconic figure—made by the legend or by someone carrying on their legacy today—portrays the vision and contribution of each subject. Whether black artistic genius, athletic excellence, political leadership, or the struggle to hold America true to its promise, each legend reminds us that America would be unrecognizable without its African American imprint. America I AM Legends takes us on an unforgettable journey to the heart of the American experience.
