Julia is stuck in a place of desperation, instigated by mistakes that have hurt the people she loves most in the world. Even though her husband and their children have seemingly forgiven her, she cannot forgive herself. As she sits on a stone wall eighty feet above a concrete walking trail on a cold winter day, Julia is prepared to jump—until fate steps in and changes everything. J. P. is a marathon runner who is suffering catastrophic injuries from a car accident. After he is told he cannot run again, he must rely on Julia, his physical therapist, to not only guide him through his physical challenges, but also his emotional obstacles. When she hands J. P. an inspiring note at the end of his therapy, will it change how he views himself and his life? Through struggles of illness, abandonment, poverty, loss, and failure, the lives of Julia, J. P., and five others intersect as each are shown a glimmer of light in their darkest days and then use that light to ignite the flame in others. I Am the Maple is the inspiring tale of friendship, love, and the strength of the human spirit as destiny leads seven people to cross paths and help rescue each other from the darkness.

One of the Best Books of the Year The Washington Post • Los Angeles Times • Milwaukee Journal Sentinel The story of Frank Sinatra’s second act, Sinatra finds the Chairman on top of the world, riding high after an Oscar victory—and firmly reestablished as the top recording artist of his day. Following Sinatra from the mid-1950s to his death in 1998, Kaplan uncovers the man behind the myth, revealing by turns the peerless singer, the (sometimes) powerful actor, the business mogul, the tireless lover, and—of course—the close associate of the powerful and infamous. It was in these decades that the enduring legacy of Frank Sinatra was forged, and Kaplan vividly captures “Ol’ Blue Eyes” in his later years. The sequel to the New York Times best-selling Frank, here is the concluding volume of the definitive biography of "The Entertainer of the Century."

Well, gentlemen, here’s a tale that people have told time and again . . . . So begins the title story in this collection of fifty Sicilian folk and fairy tales edited and translated by noted folklore scholar Jack Zipes. But while some of the stories may sound as if they’ve been told time and again—such as variations on Cinderella and Puss in Boots—many will enchant English-language readers and storytellers for the first time. From “The Pot of Basil” to “The Talking Belly,” “The Little Mouse with the Stinky Tail” to “Peppi, Who Wandered out into the World,” the stories in Catarina the Wise range from simple tales of getting a new dress or something good to eat to fantastical plots for outwitting domineering husbands, rescuing impoverished fathers, or attracting wealthy suitors (frequently the Prince of Portugal). Many feature strong, clever women (usually daughters who become queen). Many are funny; many are wise. Some are very, very strange. As Zipes relates, the true story of their origins is as extraordinary as the tales themselves. Born to a poor family of sailors in Palermo, Giuseppe Pitrè would go on to serve with Garibaldi, become a traveling country doctor, and gather one of the most colossal collections of folk and fairy tales of the nineteenth century. But while his work as a folklorist rivaled that of the Brothers Grimm, Pitrè remains a relative unknown. Catarina the Wise highlights some of the most delectable stories at the heart of his collection. Featuring new, original illustrations, this book is a beautiful, charming treasure for any fan of story, storytelling, and heroines and heroes living happily ever after—sometimes.

After expressing my doubts and fears about leaving my comfort zone on the Gold Coast, in order to venture the road in an ageing motorhome in unfamiliar territory for an undefined destination, I reflected on that last long journey. We had experienced breakdowns, bad weather, boredom, relentless distance, but also saw breathtaking scenery, interesting people and the delight of the changing panorama day by day. There were times though when I wanted to get the next flight home. After our first adventure nineteen months ago, we felt ready for the road again. On our last journey we never got further than Melbourne, encountering the winter weather down south after a hot journey down the coast of New South Wales, We had scurried back north to the tropics in North Queensland having been too used to the warmer climate of Queensland. This time we decided to do ‘The Big Lap’ by road from Queensland up north through to the Northern Territory and coastal Western Australia, coastal South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and back to Queensland’s Gold Coast - anticlockwise. It is better to travel this direction from east to west to take advantage of prevailing winds, avoid ‘The Big Wet’ monsoon weather up north and get back down south before the onset of the northern Summer. We have included fifty color photos from our collection together with maps and a listing of the road route taken. This diary commences with a short trip to Queensland’s Sunshine Coast with a stop on the Gold Coast. The big journey took us up to Rockhampton and across central Queensland via Longreach and Mt. Isa. We continued down to Tennant Creek in Northern Territory to Uluru, then back up via Katherine to Darwin. From Darwin we travelled back down to Katherine across to Western Australia’s Kununurra, and Broome down the coast to Perth, Margaret River and Bremer Bay on the south coast. This completed the first part of the lap around Australia. Diary 3 completes the second half of ‘The Big Lap’ back to Queensland and exploration of Tasmania.
