In an attempt to establish correlations between variations in the abundance of certain marine organisms and fluctuations in hydrographic variables, a program was initiated late in 1950 that involved periodic sampling of water and plankton from the surface to depths of 1000 meters. The physico-chemical variables of temperature, salinity, oxygen, silicate and phosphate were determined at intervals from the surface to a depth of 1000 meters for the first 2 years of the program, and to 900 meters subsequently when the loss of some of the hydrographic wire necessitated limiting the depth of the casts. This report presents the hydrographic data. (Author).

April and May of 1988 along the central California coast were characterized as a period of strong coastal upwelling produced by moderate to strong northwesterly winds present throughout the period. A product of this upwelling event was the manifestation of southward geostrophic currents which extended to a distance of approximately 50 km from the coast. From 08 to 11 May 1988, hydrographic surveying was conducted within the Monterey Bay. Internal waves, with amplitudes of up to 30 m were present throughout the period and effectively masked the mean signal, implying that averaging is essential to avoid aliasing. The current -- temperature -- depth (CTD) data were averaged to estimate the mean field during this time frame. Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) data, were also averaged. The mean flow field and dynamic topography implied anticyclonic surface flow with cyclonic flow at 200 m depth. ADCP derived mean flows compared favorably with geostrophic mean flow rate in all areas except one, the deep outflow region along the northern wall of the Canyon. Application of ocean models of boundary layer flow of the geostrophic mean field yielded flows similar to those described above. Wind stress experiments indicated that strong wind field may influence surface circulation in the Bay. Interactions between the coastal upwelling geostrophic jet and the Monterey Submarine Canyon is believed to have been a major mechanism responsible for the mean flow.

NATO Advanced Research Institutes are designed to explore unre solved problems. By focusing complementary expertise from various disciplines onto one unifying theme, they approach old problems in new ways. In line with this goal of the NATO Science Committee, and with substantial support from the u.s. Office of Naval Research and the Seabed Assessment Program of the U. S. National Science Founda tion, such a Research Institute on the theme of Coastal Upwelling and Its Sediment Record was held september 1-4, 1981, in Vilamoura, Portugal. The theme implies a modification of uniformitarian thinking in earth science. Expectations were directed not so much towards find ing the key to the past as towards exploring the limits of interpret ing the past based on present upwelling oceanography. Coastal up welling and its imprint on sediments are particularly well-suited for such a scientific inquiry. The oceanic processes and conditions characteristic of upwelling are well understood and are a well packaged representation of ocean science that are familiar to geolo gists, just as the magnitude of bioproduction and sedimentation in upwelling regimes --among other biological and geological processes- have made oceanographers realize that the bottom has a feedback role for their models.

Eighty-six oceanographic stations were occupied in the waters between Monterey Bay and San Francisco Bay during the period 7-14 November 1969. Values of beam transmittance, oxygen content, particulate count, and temperatures were obtained from the surface to 100 meters. These parameters were analyzed and compared by means of depth profiles, horizontal contours and vertical contours. The average sea surface temperature during this period was 14.44C. The northern part of Monterey Bay had the lowest values of beam transmittance and highest values of particulate count. The California Current appears to be flowing southward down the coast at depths above 60 meters and entering Monterey Bay where it sinks to a depth of at least 61 meters. Indications of downwelling are present off the coast between Pt. Ano Nuevo and Santa Cruz and this is attributed to the northward flowing Davidson URRENT IMPINGING ON THE SHORE ANDn Current impinging on the shore and sinKING. A layer of maximum particulate count was often found to exist within the thermocline. (Author).
