Human Proportions for Artists is a profusely illustrated reference book. It is intended for colege level students and serious artists. Avard Fairbanks made a proportion study of more than 100 measurements on each of 25 male and female adults. Detailed drawings were made illustrating these dimensions, including front and lateral fine features of the faces. Anatomical and anthropometric features are included and explained. These measurements are tabulated in life size and in different ratios from heroic, 3/2, to 1/12th life size in twelve columns. A presentation of relative proportions, using Leonardo da Vince's system, is included. This book is intended as an assistance for creating fine realistic and representational art, includ-portraits, from monumental to miniature sizes.

An intuitive approach for figure artists to get proportions right. Traditional methods of measuring body proportions rely on the abstract memorization of convoluted fractions or multiples of the human head. But artists shouldn't have to be mathematicians. Figure Drawing in Proportion introduces a better, more intuitive, less intimidating way to get proportions right. It starts with the revelation that--despite the wonderful variety of bodies in this world--the human figure has standard size relationships artists can build upon for accurate renderings. If you know, for example, that the collarbone is the same width as the head, it's much easier to draw the head in proper relationship to the shoulders. Knowing that the palm should be the same width as the knee helps establish the correct relationships in a seated portrait. This book highlights dozens of such key internal and comparative measurements. Once you start looking, you will discover even more. Ideal for any level of artist, this practical approach to proportions makes figure drawing more approachable and more rewarding. Inside you'll find: • 9 full step-by-step demonstrations, using various poses and figures to show proportioning techniques in practice. • Internal and comparative measurements and how to apply them to figure drawings. • Simple strategies for recalling key proportions as you work.

This guide to the proportions of the human form is a reformatted reproduction of the famous but hard to find work by Johann Gottfried Shadow. It includes images of plates engraved by John Sutcliffe from the English translation, and images of the original German plates. The original was a huge book, each plate was 24" by 19" for this version the large plates were photographed to reproduce them on a single page, but also reproduced in sections so they can be seen as large as possible. It includes an introduction, a history of the study of human proportion and a description of the plates plus the original German plates reproduced on single pages. Schadow based based his work on the pioneering work of the Greek Sculptor Polycletus who both wrote a treatise on human proportion and sculpted a figure to illustrate his work. Polycletus was among the creators of classical Greek sculpture, famous for his naturalism.

Geared toward artists of all levels, from beginners through professionals, this handy, pocket-sized book will help spark your imagination and creativity. Whether your interest is in figure drawing, fine arts, fashion design, game design, or creating comic book or manga art, you will find this helpful book filled with actionable insights.

The power of the image of the nude--the expressivity of the flesh--has inspired artists from the beginning. An understanding of human form is essential for artists to be able to express themselves with the figure. Anatomy makes the figure. Human Anatomy for Artists: The Elements of Form is the definitive analytical work on the anatomy of the human figure. No longer will working artists have to search high and low to find the information they need. In this, the most up-to-date and fully illustrated guide available, Eliot Goldfinger--sculptor, illustrator, scientific model-maker, and lecturer on anatomy--presents a single, all-inclusive reference to human form, capturing everything artists need in one convenient volume. Five years in the making, and featuring hundreds of photos and illustrations, this guide offers more views of each bone and muscle than any other book ever published: every structure that creates or influences surface form is individually illustrated in clear, carefully lit photographs and meticulous drawings. Informed by the detailed study of both live models and cadavers, it includes numerous unique presentations of surface structures--such as fat pads, veins, and genitalia--and of some muscles never before photographed. In addition, numerous cross sections, made with reference to CT scans, magnetic resonance imaging, and cut cadavers, trace the forms of all body regions and individual muscles. Information on each structure is placed on facing pages for ease of reference, and the attractive two-color format uses red ink to direct readers rapidly to important points and areas. Finally, an invaluable chapter on the artistic development of basic forms shows in a series of sculptures the evolution of the figure, head, and hands from basic axes and volumes to more complex organic shapes. This feature helps place the details of anatomy within the overall context of the figure. Certain to become the standard reference in the field, Human Anatomy for Artists will be indispensable to artists and art students, as well as art historians. It will also be a useful aid for physical and dance therapists, athletes and their trainers, bodybuilders, and anyone concerned with the external form of the human body. With the renewed interest in figurative art today, this will be an especially welcome volume.
