The proportion of households in the United States with one television set or more was 95.0 percent in January 1969. This marks a continuation of the very gradual upward trend of recent years, during which the high percentage of households with TV sets left little room for furthur [sic] growth. The percentage of households with two or more sets has been increasing, and reached 29.4 (percent) in January 1969. This general trend has been present in all geographic areas and in all sizes of household classifications.

By May 1964 the percent of households in the United States with television sets reached 93, up 3 percentage points from 90 percent found in January 1962. The proportion of households with one set has not changed significantly during the past four years. Apparently, households acquiring their first set replace the households moving from the one-set category into the two-or-more set category. The latter group increased from about one household in eight in 1961, to about one household in six in 1964.

The proportion of households in the United States with one television set or more was 94.1 percent in June 1967. This marks a continuation of the very gradual upward trend of recent years, during which the high percentage of households with TV sets left little room for furthur [sic] growth. This widespread presence of TV in recent years has also been accompanied by a continued reduction in the gap between those segments of our population with the lowest and highest percentages of TV sets. The percentage of households with two or more sets has been increasing, and reached 24.9 (percent) in June 1967. These increases occurred in all geographic areas and in all sizes of household classifications.

Three out of four households in the United States had television sets in February 1956, according to the results of a sample survey made by the Bureau of the Census, Department of Commerce. About 73 percent of all United States households had one or more TV sets. There was an increase of six percentage points over the 67 percent of households with television sets in June 1955 when the Bureau of the Census made a similar survey. This increase in television households in eight months is a continuation of the rapid expansion of television which has taken place since the beginning of the decade. In 1950, the first time that a question on television was included in a census, only 12 percent of all households had television sets.

The percentage of households in the United States with television sets continued to increase from May 1960 to January 1962. However, the changes since May 1961--a small overall increase and a number of relatively small increases and decreases for geographical and other parts of the total--are too small to be statistically significant. As a group, they are consistent with a slow upward trend. In January 1962, 90 percent of all households had one or more television sets in comparison with 88 percent in May 1960. The percentage with one set was 77 at both dates; the increases occurred in the group with two or more sets--from 11 percent in May 1960 to 13 percent in January 1962.

In August 1965, the proportion of households in the United States with one television set or more was 92.4 percent. This was not significantly different from 92.8 percent found in the previous survey conducted in May 1964. However, the percent of households with two or more sets increased from 16.8 to 19.5, and the percent with one set went down from 75.9 to 72.9. This increase in multi-set households continues a trend plainly apparent in earlier surveys of the series.

The percentage of households with television sets in the United States continued to increase during 1958 and early 1959, according to the results of a sample survey conducted by the Bureau of the Census, Department of Commerce. The survey, conducted in May 1959, indicated that 86 percent of all households had television sets compared with 83 percent in January 1958, and 80 percent in April 1957. Thus, rapid gains have been made since 1950 when the first comprehensive information on television obtained by the 1950 Census of Housing indicated that only 12 percent of all households had television sets.
