Every week a terrorist attack, riot, or political scandal makes the headlines—and we feel the world around us shaking again. We struggle to separate truth from biased statements and hope from naïveté. We wonder how we got here and where these uncertain days will take us. One of the world’s top investigative reporters, John S. Dickerson, addresses this post-truth, post-Christian society in Hope of Nations. Hope of Nations shows us how and why the world is changing, where those changes will lead, and what it looks like to live like Christ in today’s society. With fascinating historical and political background, Dickerson helps us understand: The five major forces driving global change in the world today Why violent displays of Islam continue resurfacing The incoming moral, social, and political impact of American millennials Ten ways to respond biblically to trends shaping the world right now How to live with Christian courage and compassion in tumultuous times “Times of great social upheaval are times of great spiritual opportunity,” writes Dickerson. “You can live the adventure of this era with great purpose. You can know with confidence that the Creator of the universe appointed you to bring light and life to this moment in human history.” Among the youngest award-winning journalists and a seminary-trained pastor, Dickerson brings his reporting skills, generational perspective, and biblical insights to this groundbreaking book. I commend this well researched and well written book. Congratulations to Dr Tom Holland and the publisher for this valuable and timely contribution on Romans. --Michael A. Milton, PhD, Presbyterian minister, Chncellor and CEO and the James M. Baird Jr. Chair of Pastoral Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary Tom's commentary invites readers to break away from fixed ideas and journey to new places. It is informed, scholarly, rich in exegetical insights, yet easy to understand. Utilizing historical and contextual hermeneutics Tom argues for a reading of Romans that is tied to the Old Testament Scriptures, rooted in Isaiah, is Christ centered and communally focused. I highly recommend it for pilgrims seeking to know God more. --Lawson Murray, President, Scripture Union Canada, 1885 Clement Road, Pickering, Ontario Tom Holland's study demonstrates how a deeper understanding of the Old Testament, and particularly of its prophesied new exodus, can illumine Paul's theology of the person and work of Christ in profound ways. Here one will find scholarship that is not only solid but faithful, thorough and yet accessible--in short, scholarship in service of the church. --L. Michael Morales, PhD, Professor of Biblical Studies, Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary Tom Holland is Senior Research Fellow in Biblical Studies at the Wales Evangelical School of Theology. He has a DipTh from Cambridge, a BD from London and a PhD from the University of Wales. Before entering academia he founded and pastored two churches in Hertfordshire England. He has written several international acclaimed books on the Bible and teaches and preaches in Universities, seminaries and churches around the world. Hope of the nations The book of Romans is a masterpiece of Christian doctrine through which the apostle Paul explores many fundamentals of the Christian faith. In this letter, Paul, the servant of Jesus Christ, affirms the reality of humanity’s fallen condition and God’s divine provision for redemption. Through this letter originally addressed to the believers in ancient Rome, we today can peer into the clouded mirror of divine grace and glimpse the plan of redemption as sovereignly designed by the Master Potter through the life, death, and resurrection of His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.

How can the church move forward in unity amid such political strife and cultural contention? As Christians, we’ve felt pushed to the outskirts of national public life, yet even within our congregations we are divided about how to respond. Some want to strengthen the evangelical voting bloc. Others focus on social justice causes, and still others would abandon the public square altogether. What do we do when brothers and sisters in Christ sit next to each other in the pews but feel divided and angry? Is there a way forward? In How the Nations Rage, political theology scholar and pastor Jonathan Leeman challenges Christians from across the spectrum to hit the restart button by shifting our focus from redeeming the nation to living as a nation already redeemed rejecting the false allure of building heaven on earth while living faithfully as citizens of a heavenly kingdom letting Jesus’ teaching shape our public engagement as we love our neighbors and seek justice When we identify with Christ more than a political party or social grouping, we can return to the church’s unchanging political task: to become the salt and light Jesus calls us to be and offer the hope of his kingdom to the nations.

What if we understood nationalism as a religion instead of an ideology? What if nationalism is more spiritual than it is political? Several Christian thinkers have rightly recognized nationalism as a form of idolatry. However, in Why Do the Nations Rage?, David A. Ritchie argues that nationalism is inherently demonic as well. Through an interdisciplinary analysis of scholarship on nationalism and the biblical theology behind Paul’s doctrine of “powers,” Ritchie uncovers how the impulse behind nationalism is as ancient as the tower of Babel and as demonic as the worship of Baal. Moreover, when compared to Christianity, Ritchie shows that nationalism is best understood as a rival religion that bears its own distinctive (and demonically inspired) false gospel, which seeks to both imitate and distort the Christian gospel.

It saddens my heart that so many believers have no knowledge of the Holy Spirit because He is the most ignored person in the world, yet He was very instrumental in the lives and ministry of the early church. This is why the body of Christ has been operating powerless. This has really inspired me to write about the Person of the Holy Spirit.
