The historical achievements in organic natural product synthesis can be recognized most clearly in the research accomplishments of Albert Eschenmoser. For example, his work on the chemical synthesis of vitamin B12 defined the frontier in organic natural product synthesis and profoundly influenced the science of organic chemistry. In addition to revealing the beautiful reaction pathways leading to compounds of great biochemical significance, Albert Eschenmoser has contributed innovative methods of outstanding utility for organic synthesis. Few individuals have so fundamentally influenced the science of organic chemistry as Albert Eschenmoser has. Over the years, a sizable fraction of Albert Eschenmoser′s work has been published in Helvetica Chimica Acta, hence the decision of the Editor to produce a special issue of the journal on the occasion of Albert Eschenmoser′s 75th birthday, celebrated on August 5, 2000. The highly impressive set of 67 original research papers submitted in response to the Editor′s invitation could not, for obvious technical reasons, be accommodated in a single issue and were thus divided over the August and September issues. The international reaction to this tribute has been so overwhelmingly enthusiastic that the two issues have been combined in this single volume for separate publication.

Fiefs and Vassals has changed our view of the medieval world. It offers a fundamental challenge to orthodox conceptions of feudalism. Susan Reynolds argues that the concepts of the fief and of vassalage, as understood by historians of medieval Europe, were constructed by post-medieval scholarsfrom the works of medieval academic lawyers and tha they provide a bad guide to the realities of medieval society. This is a radical new examination of relations between rulers, nobles, and free men, the distillation of wide-ranging research by a leading medieval historian. It has revolutionized the way we think of the Middle Ages.

Though its significance was recognized almost immediately, it was not approved by all. At a time when Parliament and crown were vying for power, the Commons were angered by John Cowell's [1554-1611] monarchical orientation, which was evident in such definitions as "King," "Parliament," "Prerogative," "Recoveries," and "Subsidies." When a joint committee of Lords and Councilors reviewed the work, the ensuing controversy nearly halted the affairs of government. James I intervened in fear that his own fiscal interests would not be approved by Parliament, and ordered a proclamation that imprisoned Cowell, suppressed the book and ordered all copies burned by a public hangman on March 10, 1610. Moreover, it contained a quotation critical of Littleton that angered Coke so much that he helped to suppress the book and prosecute Cowell. It remained in use, however, and went through several editions. Later enlarged editions, such as this

The ongoing publication of Heidegger's complete works has called into question the interpretive and translative practices that have historicized Heidegger's thinking through the adaptation of categories and mind-sets inherited from metaphysics. Ivo De Gennaro argues that the posthumous treatises in particular - many of which have yet to be translated into English - show that the "other onset of thinking" that Being and Time inaugurated and which those historicizing accounts have interpreted and translated away, has already taken place. This book, on the other hand, speaks solely from that other onset, that of being itself. While arguing the "one-pointedness" of Heidegger's entire path of thinking, De Gennaro draws mainly on the posthumous treatises to offer both a provisional exploration of, and an introduction to, a thinking whose sense and implications have barely begun to emerge. This challenging and original interpretation marks an important contribution to Heidegger scholarship.

Computational psychoanalysis is a new field stemming from Freudian psychoanalysis. The new area aims to understand the primary formal structures and running mechanisms of the unconscious while implementing them into computer sciences. Computational Psychoanalysis and Formal Bi-Logic Frameworks provides emerging information on this new field which uses psychoanalysis and the unconscious mind to make advancements in computational research. While highlighting the challenges of applying analytical logic trends to primary formal structures, readers will learn the valuable outputs to society when these trends are successfully implemented. This book is an important resource for computer scientists, researchers, academics, and other professionals seeking current research on applying psychoanalysis and Freudian concepts to computational structures.
