Excerpt from History of Congregationalism and Memorials of the Churches in Norfolk and Suffolk This book owes its origin to the generosity of Mr. D. H. Goddard, late of Newcastle, now of Chester-le-Street, who, at the meeting of the Congregational Union at Ipswich in 1872, offered a premium for the production of a History of Congregationalism in Norfolk and Suffolk. The execution of the work was, without solicitation on my part, confided to me. Living at a distance from libraries, I have to a great extent been dependent on my own collection of MSS., books, sermons, and tracts; almost all those which are quoted, except otherwise indicated, being in my own possession: but, whilst the work has been passing through the press, I have made considerable additions of interesting and important matter from the Record Office, and the British Museum. I am indebted to S. W. Rix, Esq., of Beccles, for the use of his collections illustrative of the history of Congregationalism in these two counties, and for the encouragement he has, for many years, given me to attempt such a work as the present; to the Rev. Geo. Gould, of Norwich, for the use of MSS. which have been very helpful to me; and to the Rev. T. W. Davids, of Upton, for contributions and counsels which have been of great value. My best thanks are also due to the Rev. T. Hunter, for affording me facilities for consulting books and MSS. in Dr. Williams' Library; and to those pastors of churches who have allowed me to copy, or make extracts from, their several church books. I have taken these, rather than any existing descriptions of the churches, as the basis of this history. The history of the Baptist Churches is more of a fragment than I desired; it is nearly complete to the close of last century, but sufficient information with regard to many later formed churches has not been supplied. The facts here carefully gathered together may hereafter furnish occasion for a more general view of East Anglian Congregationalism, which the limits of this volume prevent me from adding. Excerpt from The Congregational Church at Wrentham in Suffolk: Its History and Biographies The compiler has in view chiefly the following objects: first, to produce a work which may serve as a memorial of the honoured men whose history is here briefly told: next, to record the events connected with the history of the particular Church to which he ministers, so far as he has been able to recover them: and thirdly, to excite among the members of his own congregation an interest, practical and salutary, in the varied fortunes of the church to which they belong. He trusts that enough is gathered together to warrant him in presenting the result to those who honour the principles of Nonconformity, and the memory of the men by whom, in. Excerpt from The Church Memorial: Containing Important Historical Facts and Reminiscences Connected With the Associate and Associate Reformed Churches, Previous to Their United Presbyterian Church of North America Nor do we desire to bury all of the past. We love 'the Churches in which many of us have not only been born, but born again. They have been faithful Churches of the living God. They have contended earnestly for the truth of God. They have done good service in the cause of our dear Re deemer. And although they are now organically one, and we rejoice that it is so, yet Our hearts are full of sacred memories, and we turn with mingled emotions of joy and sorrow to the past. We remember our old ecclesiastical associations with tenderest emotion, and with the captives Of Old we are ready to say, If I forget thee, 0, Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning. One prominent Object in the preparation of this work was to preserve the leading facts connected with the union of these Churches. In a few years the'fathers of the Church who took an active part in these proceedings will be no more. Others will be called to carry out the principles upon which this union was formed. Various Opinions may arise as to the meaning of different acts and the design of their framers. Such we know has been the case hereto fore both in Church and State. Even the constitution of the United States is now differently interpreted; and its true meaning can be certainly determined only by the recorded sentiments of its framers. For this purpose, therefore, we have collected together the action of these Churches and the remarks on the subject of union in the different Synods, that in after years they may Speak for themselves. Excerpt from The Early History of the Congregational Church and Society, of North Branford: Delivered in the Congregational Church, Jan, 6, 1850 IT is among the first duties of every religious community which is fortunate enough to have a Past, to know its own history. Some of God's richest mercies to a given generation will be found to have had their earthly germ in times long past; and the} generation consequently which is not familiar with the experience of its predecessors, can have at the best but a very limited and imperfect view of the extent of God's goodness to itself. Each generation as it appears on the earth in its turn, (and especially here in New England, ) resem bles in an important respect the trees which beautify its surface; its roots - the source of its beauty and glory and life - lie buried in the soil. Whatever there may be in the character of this community which is. Worthy to be perpetu ated among the generations to come, came, under God, mainly, as I believe, from the fathers who lie buried in these adjacent grounds. I propose then to trace the history of this church and society, so far as the materials for such a history are still accessible - from its earliest days. The religious history of the early inhabitants of North Branford, until the year 1701, is nearly identical with that of the Congregational church of Branford, with which they were originally connected. We claim, therefore, a common property, and feel a common interest in all that pertains to the early history of that church. The outlines of that his tory, in a few words, may properly precede such matters as relate exclusively to ourselves.
