The construction of the Golden Gate and the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridges caught the imagination of the world, and they continue to inspire awe even today. >High Steel records the history of these magnificent bridges and their development. The bridges were designed to serve transportation needs while being flexible enough to withstand major earthquakes, but their architectural triumph is that they also enhance the beauty of their natural surroundings. >High Steel is a tribute to and record of the magnitude of that accomplishment.

Composite Construction in Steel and Concrete IX The highly successful International Conference series on Composite Construction in Steel and Concrete is a major forum for researchers, practitioners, and engineers to share and discuss their research, practical experience and innovations related to composite constructions in steel and concrete. Composite Construction is a key consideration in the design of buildings and infrastructure. Significant advances in research and development have increased the knowledge of the structural performance of composite structures. Some areas are becoming well understood and implemented in the design practice, codes and standards worldwide, while others like, e.g., application of high-performance materials or dismountable and reusable composite members need further studies; trends that are reflected by the conference papers. The 62 contributions contained in this book cover a wide variety of topics, including composite beams, composite columns, composite decks, joints, shear connections, fire behavior, seismic behavior, fatigue and fracture, codification, composite bridges, innovative hybrid structures, numerical investigations and practical applications. The Papers are peer-reviewed by the Scientific Board and may be adapted based on the outcome of the discussions during the conference. This book therefore summarizes the state-of-the-art in composite construction worldwide, as presented at the 9th International Conference on Composite Construction in Steel and Concrete hosted by the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, University of Stuttgart, RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau and University of Luxembourg, representing the work of authors from 18 countries.

High-strength materials offer alternatives to frequently used materials for high-rise construction. A material of higher strength means a smaller member size is required to resist the design load. However, high-strength concrete is brittle, and high-strength thin steel plates are prone to local buckling. A solution to overcome such problems is to adopt a steel-concrete composite design in which concrete provides lateral restraint to steel plates against local buckling, and steel plates provide confinement to high-strength concrete. Design of Steel-Concrete Composite Structures Using High Strength Materials provides guidance on the design of composite steel-concrete structures using combined high-strength concretes and steels. The book includes a database of over 2,500 test results on composite columns to evaluate design methods, and presents calculations to determine critical parameters affecting the strength and ductility of high-strength composite columns. Finally, the book proposes design methods for axial-moment interaction curves in composite columns. This allows a unified approach to the design of columns with normal- and high-strength steel concrete materials. This book offers civil engineers, structural engineers, and researchers studying the mechanical performance of composite structures in the use of high-strength materials to design and construct advanced tall buildings. - Presents the design and construction of composite structures using high-strength concrete and high-strength steel, complementing and extending Eurocode 4 standards - Addresses a gap in design codes in the USA, China, Europe and Japan to cover composite structures using high-strength concrete and steel in a comprehensive way - Gives insight into the design of concrete-filled steel tubes and concrete-encased steel members - Suggests a unified approach to designing columns with normal- and high-strength steel and concrete
