In response to widespread cultural fantasies about the child--including childhood innocence, the child as origin of the adult, the fetal emergence of subjectivity, and the "inner child" movement--Hide and Seek examines representations of the child in fiction, psychoanalysis, and popular culture. Concentrating on the "go-between" function of the child in nineteenth- and twentieth-century American and British fiction, Virginia Blum shows how selected children in the works of L. P. Hartley, Charles Dickens, Henry James, and Vladimir Nabokov were actually fictional messengers who ultimately were unsuccessful at reconciling impasses in the adult world. Throughout her book Blum draws on pop images of real and fictional children, ranging from the Baby Jessica case, in which the idea of "real" paternity and family bonds comes to the mythic fore, to the film Home Alone, in which the abandoned child becomes protector of his family's hearth and home. Hide and Seek raises provocative questions about the ways in which our culture fetishizes the idea of the child at the same time that we treat with comparative indifference the conditions under which many real children actually live. "A work of striking originality and consistent intellectual honesty, forcing us into genuinely profound and darkly uncomfortable areas of speculation." -- James R. Kincaid, author of Child-Loving: The Erotic Child and Victorian Culture

“Aren’t wedding coordinators supposed to prevent that sort of thing?” suggested Carol This is the question that greeted wedding coordinator Belle Saint James when she was waylaid by a group of women at the conclusion of a talk about her business at the Ladies Auxiliary. Belle has been haunted by what happened at Janelle and Scott’s wedding. Between the wedding ceremony and the reception, the bridegroom disappeared. He was there one minute, and gone the next! She was as surprised as everyone else. Was there anything she could have done to prevent it? Had she done the right thing when she involved her lover; Vietnam veteran, ex-policeman, and now Private Investigator, Marcel Smith, in locating the missing bridegroom? Just how encompassing are the responsibilities of a wedding coordinator anyhow?

For museum curator Andrew Allison, the sleepy little Maine village of Safehaven has always lived up to its name—until now. Fleeing an abusive relationship, Andy has returned to Safehaven for a few weeks while he figures out the future and helps his elderly Uncle Cuthbert run his antiques shop. But when Andy arrives, he learns Uncle Cuthbert is in the hospital, critically injured, the victim of a late-night break-in. Worse, one of the first messages on the shop’s answering machine is from Marcus, Andy’s ex, demanding to know Andy’s whereabouts. Nor does the bad news stop there. It seems whoever broke into Time in a Bottle is still looking for that mysterious whatever. Something they didn’t find the first time. Something they now believe Andy has. Something worth killing for? The good news is former bad boy Quinn Rafferty, Andy’s high school crush, is back in town and interested in renewing their acquaintanceship. Quinn is not a man to run from things that go bump in the night, be they mysterious midnight prowlers or a relationship-shy, fish-out-of-water museum curator. But Quinn has a few secrets of his own…

An adventurous teen uses geocaching skills and ingenuity to save two vulnerable children. After a summer cooped up in his family's store selling bait, tackle, and soft drinks to tourists, fourteen-year-old Chase finally gets a chance to go on his first solo geocaching adventure in the foothills of the Arizona White Mountains. He uncovers a geocache—a small metal box—hidden deep in the woods in some undergrowth. Inside, in addition to a few plastic army men and a log book, is a troubling message in a child's handwriting asking for help. When Chase returns again, he finds another message in the box, this time asking for food. He is curious—and worried—about the mysterious individuals leaving the messages. Before he can turn to the adults around him for help, Chase is pulled into a complex, dangerous drama and a chilling confrontation with an unstable father who will stop at nothing to hold on to his children.

As children grow up learning how to play the game called hide and seek, we as adults tend to replicate this childhood game into our daily walk with God. We hide behind things that we think are protecting us, keeping us from further rejection and pain; the fear that we have dealt with for years seems to keep crippling us. What we dont understand is that the longer we continue to play this game of hide and seek, we are hindering ourselves from the destiny that God has ordained for our lives since the moment we took our first breath!
