On the eve of a coming-of-age ceremony that will determine her magical powers, thirteen-year-old Ariana Seaborne’s life is suddenly changed forever. When a mysterious fire engulfs her home, she becomes orphaned and is spirited away to Promisero Academy, an exclusive school of magic in the city of Port AuCaul. In this unfamiliar environment she finds allies as she struggles with her grief, her fears that she was responsible for the tragedy, and her inability to use her elusive powers. She is chosen for the Queen's Ladies, a group of young women who assist the queen, but when the political landscape changes, an attempted kidnapping thrusts her and her new friends into the fight of their lives. Dara Khan Androcles was trained from childhood to be a healer. But as a demon-possessed invader threatens Safehold, and she defends a wounded warrior on the battlefield, her hidden inner dragon thirsts for blood. Loren ta Cedric senses something different about flame-haired, falcon-eyed woman who saves him. A healer, wreathed in raw, dark power, who wields knives with deadly skill. Now he owes this thoroughly distracting female a Life-Debt. Which, in the heat of their flight to Loren's homeland to raise an army, somehow becomes Life-Mate. Dragon-human and elf, peasant and prince, logic says they have no future. Yet the power of their unlikely bond could be the only thing that saves their world from a demon poised to tear it apart. Warning: This new twist on Cinderella contains a grouchy dragon, a sentient war mare with the dry wit of a certain English Dame, and a fiery heroine who strikes serious sparks with a mercenary elf.

This book explores the development and viability of Germany’s sub-national monarchies in the decades before their sudden demise in 1918. It does so by focusing on the men who turned out to be the last ones to inherit the crowns of the country’s three smaller kingdoms: Prince Ludwig of Bavaria, Prince Friedrich August of Saxony and Prince Wilhelm of Württemberg. Imperial Germany was not a monolithic block, but a motley federation of more than twenty allied regional monarchies, headed by the Kaiser. When the German Reich became a republic at the end of the First World War, all of these kings, grand dukes, dukes and princes were swept away within a fortnight. By examining the lives, experiences and functions of these three men as heirs to the throne during the decades when they prepared themselves for their predestined role as king, this study investigates what the future of the German model of constitutional monarchy looked like before it was so abruptly discarded.
