Excerpt from Heaven, Home and Happiness This book shows that a house is not necessarily a home, a fact many forget. Here are a man and wife; they agree in nothing else, but they agree they will have a home. Architects make the plan, and mechanics execute it; the house to cost one hundred thousand dollars. It is done. The carpets are spread, lights are hoisted, curtains hung, cards of invitation sent out. The horses in gold-plated harness prance at the gate; guests come in and take their places; the musical instruments sound; the dancers go up and down; and, with one grand whirl, the wealth and the fashion and the mirth of the great town wheel amidst the pictured walls. Ha! This is happiness. Float it on the smoking viands; sound it in the music; whirl it' in the dance; cast it on the snow of sculpture; sound it up the brilliant stairway; flasl: it in the chandeliers! Happiness, indeed! Let us build on the centre of the parlor floor a throne to Happiness; let all the guests, when they come in, bring their flowers and pearls and diamonds, and throw them on this pyramid, and let it be a throne; and then let Happiness, the queen, mount the throne, and we will stand around and, all chalices lifted, we will say: Drink, 0 Queen! Live forever! But the guests depart, the flutes are breathless, the last clash of the im patient hoofs is heard in the distance, and the twain of the household come hack to see the Queen of Happiness on the throne amid the parlor floor. Excerpt from The Happiness of Heaven: By a Father of the Society of Jesus In the midst of her sits the Aument of days: .his garments are white as snow: His throne is like flames of fire. Thousands and thousands minister unto him, and ten thousand times a hundred thousand stand before Him. A river of life-giving water, as clear as crystal, whose banks are adorned With the tree of life, issues from the throne of God. The Blessed drink of the tori ent of pleasure, and are inebriated with the plenty of the house of God. All tears are wiped away from their eyes: and death shall be no more, nor mourn ing, nor crying, nor sorrow shall be any more, for the former things are passed away. And, when we are assured that no mortal eye hath seen, nor ear heard, nor heart of man conceived the happiness prepared for God's children, we must conclude that the magnificent language describ ing the heavenly Jerusalem is only symbolical; that the Holy Ghost speaks of the most precious and beautiful things we know, in order to raise our minds to the reality which they faintly represent. Excerpt from Heaven Unveiled: Embracing the Reunion and Recognition of Friends, Their Employment and Sources of Happiness, in the Christian's Future Home How many homes have been broken up how many happy unions severed how many hopes crushed; how many prospects blighted, and how many families stricken by the hand of death! In many circles bereave ments have been of so frequent occurrence, that already more than half the number that once surrounded the old hearthstone have passed away. Sorrowing friends followed them down to the waters of Jordan, but could accompany them no farther. They have disappeared in the darkness of death. Shall we recognize our friends in the world to come is a question of great interest to all, especially to those who are to-day mourning their beloved dead, and who are journeying with hope towards the better land. Our affection does not cease when the grave closes over those we love, but reaches far beyond it; and how often in our imaginations we follow our friends to the City of our God, and walk with them over the fields of bliss! Excerpt from When Home Is Heaven Experience is a great teacher. The man who has passed middle life and is possessed of the mem cry of a home where Christ was honored, and the Bible loved, is able to speak with some authority concerning what a home should be and also as to what it may accomplish in the life of a child. I do not know of any person who is more to be pitied than the one who has grown to manhood or womanhood and is deprived of such a memory.
