Since Abdel Fatah al-Sisi seized power in a bloody coup in 2013, Egypt has descended into a country of military dictatorship. Once a cradle of civilization of the highest spiritual integrity, Egypt today is a country which needs healing on many levels - socially, economically, politically and spiritually. Critical, but also deeply sensitive and humane, this book endeavours to improve public policy in Egypt, so that a just social peace can be manifested in the country. Social challenges - such as democratic deficit, press freedom violations and police brutality - are also explored, as well as suggestions how public- and religious education can be improved. Violent Extremism is another topic this book addresses; as both internally and externally, the region is faced with major security problems in terms of countering extremism. Highly innovative and profound, this book explores social scientific-, ethical- and Islamic approaches how human rights and social cohesion can be improved in Egypt.

REGARDING: Manifesting Peace and Prosperity in the International Community. Dear All, As the leader of the Intelligence Community - which includes the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6), the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), the German Intelligence Community, the directeur général de la sécurité extérieure (DGSI ) the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), the Federal Security Service (FSB), the Federal Protective Service (FSO), the GRU - as well as NATO and the Russian Armed Forces - we can safely say that Peace will be restored between Russia and Ukraine once Vladimir Putin is ousted, and a governmental change in Russia has been implemented. The death and killing of officers, soldiers, civilians, journalists, reporters and innocent children - in both Ukraine and Russia - is so unnecessary and must be stopped. Hence the Russian invasion of Ukraine must end, and Diplomacy and Dialogue must be restored. To achieve that, it is imperative that Vladimir Putin is graciously removed from office - so that Peace and Harmony can be restored between Ukraine and Russia - and the Russian people can be part of the International Community again. An Amnesty should be offered to key people in the Putin regime - to encourage those individuals to do the right thing, and end the war that has cost countless of lives - so that International Law and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights can be restored in the International Community. We are also advocating the founding of a world organization that is above all other governments - even above the US, China, the UK, Russia and the EU - so that Peace and Prosperity can be manifested in the world. So until an organization like that is formed in the International Community - it will be the NGO BTB-Global Peacebuilding which will handle matters - such as bringing Russia and the US into an International Peacebuilding Alliance. Also, the status quo concerning NATO has to change. This means that NATO will have to make room for a new military international alliance sooner or later - that encompasses Russia, the EU, China, Germany and the US - if circumstances allow. However, it's imperative that Peace and Harmony is first restored between Russia and Ukraine. Only then measures can be taken to improve NATO and implement steps to include Russia in an International Peacebuilding Alliance. Every year, the World Bank’s World Development Report (WDR) features a topic of central importance to global development. The 2018 WDR—LEARNING to Realize Education’s Promise—is the first ever devoted entirely to education. And the time is right: education has long been critical to human welfare, but it is even more so in a time of rapid economic and social change. The best way to equip children and youth for the future is to make their learning the center of all efforts to promote education. The 2018 WDR explores four main themes: First, education’s promise: education is a powerful instrument for eradicating poverty and promoting shared prosperity, but fulfilling its potential requires better policies—both within and outside the education system. Second, the need to shine a light on learning: despite gains in access to education, recent learning assessments reveal that many young people around the world, especially those who are poor or marginalized, are leaving school unequipped with even the foundational skills they need for life. At the same time, internationally comparable learning assessments show that skills in many middle-income countries lag far behind what those countries aspire to. And too often these shortcomings are hidden—so as a first step to tackling this learning crisis, it is essential to shine a light on it by assessing student learning better. Third, how to make schools work for all learners: research on areas such as brain science, pedagogical innovations, and school management has identified interventions that promote learning by ensuring that learners are prepared, teachers are both skilled and motivated, and other inputs support the teacher-learner relationship. Fourth, how to make systems work for learning: achieving learning throughout an education system requires more than just scaling up effective interventions. Countries must also overcome technical and political barriers by deploying salient metrics for mobilizing actors and tracking progress, building coalitions for learning, and taking an adaptive approach to reform.

This report analyses all aspects of cultural diversity, which has emerged as a key concern of the international community in recent decades, and maps out new approaches to monitoring and shaping the changes that are taking place. It highlights, in particular, the interrelated challenges of cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue and the way in which strong homogenizing forces are matched by persistent diversifying trends. The report proposes a series of ten policy-oriented recommendations, to the attention of States, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, international and regional bodies, national institutions and the private sector on how to invest in cultural diversity. Emphasizing the importance of cultural diversity in different areas (languages, education, communication and new media development, and creativity and the marketplace) based on data and examples collected from around the world, the report is also intended for the general public. It proposes a coherent vision of cultural diversity and clarifies how, far from being a threat, it can become beneficial to the action of the international community.

"Education is a powerful force that can speed up economic growth, improve income distribution, facilitate social mobility, and reduce poverty. It can also improve the quality of life for citizens by contributing to longer life expectancy, lower fertility and infant mortality rates, and a more cohesive national identity. However, none of these positive outcomes are automatic. All too often, investment in education generates low returns to the individuals involved and society at large. Thus, while investment in education is a necessary condition for faster development and prosperity, it is by no means sufficient. This MENA flagship report explores whether past investments in education in the region have generated their maximum economic returns, and, if not, why they have failed to do so. Ultimately, the answers to these questions are being sought to help policymakers chart more fruitful strategies in the future." -- Overview (p. 1).

Persuasive evidence demonstrates that gender equality in education is central to economic development. Despite more than two decades of accumulated knowledge and evidence of what works in improving gender equality, progress on the ground remains slow and uneven across countries. What is missing? Given that education is a critical path to accelerate progress toward gender equality and the empowerment of women, what is holding us back? These questions were discussed at the global symposium Education: A Critical Path to Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment, which was sponsored by the World Bank in October 2007. Girls' Education in the 21st Century is based on background papers developed for the symposium. The book's chapters reflect the current state of knowledge on education from a gender perspective and highlight the importance of, and challenges to, female education, as well as the interdependence of education and development objectives. The last chapter presents five strategic directions for advancing gender equality in education and their implications for World Bank operations. Girls' Education in the 21st Century will be of particular interest to researchers, educators, school administrators, and policy makers at the global, national, regional, and municipal levels.

The Population Situation Analysis (PSA) provides the basis for an integrated appraisal of the population and reproductive health dynamics and their impacts on poverty, inequality and development. By integrating a micro and macro analytical approach, the population situation analysis clarifies the interactions between individual behaviour and demographic dynamics. The Population Situation Analysis (PSA) responds to demand by countries that international cooperation should promote national capacity-building and recognize national ownership and leadership as prerequisites for development, in accordance with the principles agreed at the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) and the Millennium Declaration. This manual contributes to more efficient evidence-based programming, which relies on increased capacity for data generation, new databases, the consolidation of available evidence and the promotion of the use of hard data.
