“True love is like ghosts, which everybody talks about and few have seen.” —Francois, Duc de La Rochefoucauld, Writer “To have a good friend is the purest of all God's gifts, for it is a love that has no exchange of payment. It is, therefore, an indescribable bond that brings with it a far deeper devotion than all the others.” —Frances Farmer, Actress Whether it's the love we feel for parents, significant others, or even pets, this treasury of quotes and passages offers a wonderfully diverse way to discover the meaning of love. Included are thoughts from talented minds such as George Bernard Shaw, Anna Quindlen, Woody Allen, and many more. Generation after generation of readers have kept Hannah Whitall Smith's The Christian's Secret of a Happy Life in continuous print since its first publication in 1875. Many of them, however, never became well acquainted with similar gems of spiritual devotion that are found not only in her other published writings but also in the thousands of pages of unpublished letters and journals in which she recorded her spiritual journey. In 1982, through the kindness of her great-granddaughter, Barbara Strachey Halpern, the editors were given free access to the family's treasure lode of books, memorabilia, and manuscripts at her home in Oxford, England. The result was God Is Enough. The warm response generated by its first printing in 1986 and supported by the thousands who welcomed each additional printing thereafter indicates that the practical spiritual insights of this most widely read spiritual counselor of the nineteenth century still speak to us today.

An emotional novel about a young Jewish boy whose parents die at the hands of the Nazis but he is saved by a Catholic Frenchwoman and raised in her faith. When the war ends Michel's aunt in Israel claims him but "Maman Rose" Michel's foster French mother refuses to give him up and the battle is soon joined. What begins as a personal quarrel in a small provincial town slowly and inexorably grows into a cause célèbre -- involving the hierarchy of the Church and the leaders of French Jewry, as the boy goes into hiding passed from one secret refuge to another by Maman Rose and by the priests and nuns. The conflict that divides France -- reviving old passions and stirring up anti-Semitism and anticlericalism -- is played out in the heart of the child himself. But in the end it is up to young Michel, torn and devastated by opposing loyalties and loves, who must decide his own fate.

Standing in the Great Room at my home, I see a rainbow, appearing between the mirrors on my living room wall. I note that the six colors of the chakra system are in the correct sequence: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and lilac at the top of the rainbow. Looking at my watch, the time is 5:50 p.m. The rainbow disappears, and now, none can be seen. The time is 5:55 p.m. Next, almost immediately, two rainbows appear. The first one is on the back of the Great Room Wall to the right above the sofa while I stand there facing the mirrors. The second rainbow appears on the lamp. Both of them contain the six colors of the chakra system in the chronological order. I am left wondering if these visuals are the light of God giving me the go ahead for putting my writings into the hands of the people. Since the chakra system and the rainbow are both utilized in my writings, I believe this sign is from God and no accident.

When Jan Richardson unexpectedly lost her husband and creative partner, the singer/songwriter Garrison Doles, she did what she had long known how to do: she wrote blessings. These were no sugar-coated blessings. They minimized none of the pain and bewilderment that came in the wake of a wrenching death. With these blessings, Jan entered, instead, into the depths of the shock, anger, and sorrow. From those depths, she has brought forth words that, with heartbreaking honesty, offer surprising comfort and stunning grace. Those who know loss will find kinship among these pages. In these blessings that move through the anguish of rending into the unexpected shelters of solace and hope, there shimmers a light that helps us see we do not walk alone. From her own path of grief, Jan offers a luminous, unforgettable gift that invites us to know the tenacity of hope and to recognize the presence of love that, as she writes, is "sorrow's most lasting cure."

Sometimes, women are faced with an extremely difficult decision. An unplanned or unwanted pregnancy can seem overwhelming for some. Sharing the message of a loving life option and letting women know that we care about them too is so important. My hopes and prayers are that more women will make the loving and beautiful choice-adoption. I was blessed to have been adopted at birth, and I wanted to share my stories in the hope that they will touch people's hearts. The main reason I began writing was to promote adoption and let people know about the help that is available. Each story is unique and special in its own way and reflects my pro-life mission. If you are looking for something heartwarming, funny, or just true to life, you will find it in this book. If you are looking for some type of guidance or help, that is here too. My faith in God, my family, and my pro-life work are the main topics in these stories. The words come from my heart with a sincere desire to help others. Whether the stories are fun and upbeat or of a more serious nature, I always pray that God will guide my hands and give me the right words. Included in this book is a sweet story about my adoption as well as stories about my boisterous family life as a wife, mother, and grandmother of ten. There are some really touching stories about the people I have met while helping at the Sack Lunch Ministry at my parish as well as from the past four 40 Days for Life campaigns that have been held in our parish courtyard. Blessings to you and yours! Bye for now. Sharla.
