Instant New York Times bestseller! “A remarkable, breathtaking, earthshaking, poetic thrillride.” —Daniel José Older, New York Times bestselling author of Shadowshaper In this riveting, keenly emotional debut fantasy, a Black teen from Houston has her world upended when she learns about her godly ancestry and must save both the human and god worlds. Perfect for fans of Angie Thomas, Tomi Adeyemi, and The Hunger Games! “Make a way out of no way” is just the way of life for Rue. But when her mother is shot dead on her doorstep, life for her and her younger sister changes forever. Rue’s taken from her neighborhood by the father she never knew, forced to leave her little sister behind, and whisked away to Ghizon—a hidden island of magic wielders. Rue is the only half-god, half-human there, where leaders protect their magical powers at all costs and thrive on human suffering. Miserable and desperate to see her sister on the anniversary of their mother’s death, Rue breaks Ghizon’s sacred Do Not Leave Law and returns to Houston, only to discover that Black kids are being forced into crime and violence. And her sister, Tasha, is in danger of falling sway to the very forces that claimed their mother’s life. Worse still, evidence mounts that the evil plaguing East Row is the same one that lurks in Ghizon—an evil that will stop at nothing until it has stolen everything from her and everyone she loves. Rue must embrace her true identity and wield the full magnitude of her ancestors’ power to save her neighborhood before the gods burn it to the ground.

Libraries are an integral part of the community, a fact that can often be overlooked in today's world of home-based online research. Passive programs encourage patrons to linger—either in the library or on the library's website—and promote a connection to the library's collections, its services, and the community. Librarian's Guide to Passive Programming: Easy and Affordable Activities for All Ages presents plans for 32 passive programs designed to capture the attention of library patrons. Each chapter—which contains programs grouped thematically—details the steps necessary to reproduce the programs, and includes supporting handouts, activities, and photographs. This helpful guide also examines what passive programming is, why passive programming is relevant, and offers strategies across all aspects of its implementation—from developing program ideas to evaluating program success.

BROOKE IGNET HOCKER has two last names simply because her mother said all successful business women should have two last names.Born the daughter of teen parents, Brooke's childhood is rooted in seemingly questionable advice from her mother. In DO WHAT I SAY: LIFE AS MY MOTHER PREDICTED she shares a collection of personal essays inspired by her mother's sketchy advice. "Someday they'll hire someone younger and prettier than you and you'll hate her just because" are the words her mother shared as motivation as she entered Corporate America. In the essay "The War on Cute Millennials" readers will find relatable and humorous antics on how this advice proved true. They'll hear tales in "Eighty-Eight Fortunes" of times her mother's love of gambling landed them in Las Vegas with stacks of cash, they'll learn about a secret she's been keeping since she was eighteen years old in "Politicks," and they'll be inspired to put pen to paper after reading "Thirty Love Letters in Thirty Days." Stories of PMS, diets, and psychics told in a stream of consciousness flow will keep readers entertained with many laugh out loud moments.Sparked by her TED Talk, "Raising Teen Parents," given at Columbus, Ohio's 2014 TEDx event, these essays are intended to deliver motivation, inspiration, and humor.
The Magpie and the Child

The Magpie and the Child tells a story of great loss, love, and learning. The volume starts from the days before the poetic journey, in a sort of pre-exploration of events before they were events, moving to and through the death of her child Emily at almost eleven years old from an unsuspected heart condition. The poems speak, lament, and sing among the metaphors and religious resonances that such mourning must inspire. The thieving magpie of the prefatory title poem pecks at its own image in the glass while the poet daubs the hope of intervening blood on the "trembling lintel of faith." The volume is filled with self-examination, suffering, remembered conversations with the living child, and very real ones with the dead, each of which record the steps of the emotional journey. The second half of The Magpie and the Child is an extended sequence taking the form of a fragmented diary, one that captures the pain of loss in a skeptical age yet insists on the ritual compensation of belief. In the rigors of its form, the depth of its despair, and the necessary belief in the meaning of its artistic act, Clutterbuck's poetry carefully and beautifully maintains this very delicate balance.
