Hanover County, Virginia was erected from New Kent in 1720, which itself had been formed from York County in 1654. (In 1742 Hanover lost that portion now embraced by Louisa County.) Most of the records of the Hanover County Court were destroyed at the end of the Civil War, which is why those that did survive, the subject of this book, are of the utmost importance. Confining itself to Chancery Wills and Notes, this work consists of copies or abstracts of bills and petitions, wills and deeds, powers of attorney, administrators' accounts, depositions, receipts, and letters, bearing reference, in total, to some 7,000 persons. In the treatment and presentation of the Notes the object was to extract every detail of genealogical, biographical, and historical significance, and to arrange such matter alphabetically and chronologically in relation to families. In the treatment of the wills the aim was to provide either a comprehensive abridgement or an authentic verbatim copy. Possessing a complete name index, this is the starting point for genealogical research in Hanover County.

A new examination of the links between religion and politics in the early eighteenth century, showing how the defence of protestantism became a major plank in foreign policy. Religious ideas and power-politics were strongly connected in the early eighteenth century: William III, George I and George II all took their role as defenders of the protestant faith extremely seriously, and confessional thinking was of major significance to court whiggery. This book considers the importance of this connection. It traces the development of ideas of the protestant interest, explaining how such ideas were used to combat the perceived threats to the European states system posed by universal monarchy, and showing how the necessity of defending protestantism within Europe became a theme in British and Hanoverian foreign policy. Drawing on a wide range of printed and manuscript material in both Britain and Germany, the book emphasises the importance of a European context for eighteenth-century British history, and contributes to debates about the justification of monarchy and the nature of identity in Britain. Hanover's history is deeply intertwined with Hanover College's beginnings. Both grew from a tiny band of determined pioneers under the leadership of Williamson Dunn, who set out from Catnip Hill Road near Lexington, Kentucky, in 1809 with his wife, two children, and three slaves. Upon crossing the Ohio River, Dunn freed the slaves and founded Hanover, which was first called Dunn's Settlement. Presbyterians and Methodists played prominent roles in the fledgling community, and local historians recall a log cabin that served as an Indian trading post. Hanover has been an industrious town since it was laid out by Richard McAllister in 1763. Early craftsmen prospered, benefiting from the town's location at an intersection for travelers and settlers moving west during the colonial period. Clockmakers, gunsmiths, silversmiths, coppersmiths, cabinetmakers, and even a niche of coffee mill manufacturers thrived, and their products are highly regarded today. Freight and passenger trains arrived late in the 19th century, resulting in service from both the Pennsylvania and Western Maryland Railroads. The prominent mid-to-late-19thcentury industries of farm machinery and carriage manufacturing were replaced by a number of cigar and shoe factories, most notably Hanover Shoe. Today, furniture manufacturers, vegetable and snack food processors, power steering, wire cloth, and specialized packaging manufacturers are some of the industries that bring worldwide recognition to this small town. Hanover documents business, social, religious, and educational aspects of the community and its prosperity.
