Seven experienced craft authors show how to make simple and stunning greetings cards in a rich variety of themes: fairy cards, art nouveau, clear stamped, Celtic, oriental, Victorian, rustic, paper pierced and paper lace cards. The techniques simply explained and demonstrated include pen and wash, 3D decoupage, using pressed flowers, glass painting, using embossing powder, metal embossing, using polymer clay, rubber stamping and using clear stamps, using craft stickers, using chalks or alcohol inks, sewing beads on to cards, origami, using craft punches and quilling. The resulting projects are stunning, but the clear step by step photographs, templates for the designs and simple instructions make them achievable for card makers of all skill levels and there are dozens of beautifully photographed variations for more inspiration. The tradition of sending loved ones greeting cards goes back about 200 years and is more popular today than ever before. With a greeting card being the gift of choice for so many occasions, people are forever on the lookout for one that the recipient hasn't seen before. Because this is no easy task, the creatively minded among us are choosing to make our own cards. There are many books demonstrating how to make basic cards, but Making Mechanical Cards goes a considerable step further in showing how to make cards with mechanisms. The mechanisms are based on Victorian and Edwardian designs, and vary from the very simple to the really intricate. But the step-by-step instructions and diagrams provided make even the most complicated form of mechanism achievable. In addition, the materials and equipment needed to make these impressive cards are not extensive or specialized _--- the main requirements are card stock, glue, and scissors, with wire or thread for the more complex designs.

The most romantic and florid expressions of love were the fashion in the Victorian Age, which was to be expected of a time that masked and ornamented the erotic impulse. The end of that era was coincident with the golden age of the postcard (1890 to World War 1) and so we have tens of thousands of Valentine's Day postcards, many displaying high levels of imaginations and design. Each age leaves an impact of its character in its greeting cards and other paper ephemera. We see in the beautiful postcards of the late Victorians that era's predilections in both love and design. The imagery in Victorian Valentines Postcard Book is largely formal because, to the Victorians, love was a serious business. We see beautiful women, well-groomed children, and the classical February 14 icons of cherubs, ornate hearts and many beautiful flowers. This is a thoroughly decorated universe, featuring baroque typography, bows and ribbons everywhere, and the occasional touch of lace. So felicitously do Valentine's Day and Victoriana mesh that much of what we think of as traditional Valentine's Day imagery is Victorian in origin. We have selected 30 favorites from our collection for this gathering. That complex of attitude and tendencies that we call the Victorian Age did not, of course, vanish on the Queen's death in 1900. It persisted and evolved until the First World War. For this book we have confined ourselves to postcards published before 1910.
