Research on the use of composite materials in structural applications started more than 30 years ago but still remains active. The challenges that accompany those applications are diverse and seem to increase as the variety of applications grows. There are several fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) systems that have been introduced through the years for strengthening reinforced concrete (RC) structures. Those systems focus on strengthening of slabs, beams and columns. The present study pertains to seismic retrofit of rectangular RC columns. The typical FRP materials used in structural applications are introduced, as well as, how FRP materials become an integral part of the force-resisting system. In addition, analysis work pertaining to a series of strengthened RC columns was conducted and the results were compared to the experimental data. Moreover, deficiencies of typical material models were highlighted. Design guidelines are discussed and recommendations about current design practices are provided. Finally, research gaps and future research recommendations are identified.

The global response to COVID-19 has demonstrated the importance of vigilance and preparedness for infectious diseases, particularly influenza. There is a need for more effective influenza vaccines and modern manufacturing technologies that are adaptable and scalable to meet demand during a pandemic. The rapid development of COVID-19 vaccines has demonstrated what is possible with extensive data sharing, researchers who have the necessary resources and novel technologies to conduct and apply their research, rolling review by regulators, and public-private partnerships. As demonstrated throughout the response to COVID-19, the process of research and development of novel vaccines can be significantly optimized when stakeholders are provided with the resources and technologies needed to support their response. Vaccine Research and Development to Advance Pandemic and Seasonal Influenza Preparedness and Response focuses on how to leverage the knowledge gained from the COVID-19 pandemic to optimize vaccine research and development (R&D) to support the prevention and control of seasonal and pandemic influenza. The committee's findings address four dimensions of vaccine R&D: (1) basic and translational science, (2) clinical science, (3) manufacturing science, and (4) regulatory science.

"The 14th ASTM Symposium on Composite Materials: Testing and Design, was held March 11-12, 2002 in Pittsburgh, PA. The Testing and Design symposia, sponsored by Committee D30 on Composite Materials, have been scheduled on a roughly bi-yearly basis since 1969 to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners to meet and exchange their latest methods and findings related to the testing and design of composite materials and structures."

Over the past three decades advanced polymer composites have emerged as an attractive construction material for new structures and the strengthening/rehabilitation of existing buildings and bridges. The techniques associated with the technology, analysis and design of polymer composites in construction are continually being researched and the progress made with this exciting material will continue at an ever- increasing rate to meet the demands of the construction industry. This volume of proceedings is from the Second ACIC 2004 International Conference, which focused on the application and further exploitation of advanced composites in construction. The conference allowed practising engineers, asset managers, researchers and representative of regulatory bodies to promote the active exchange of scientific and technical information on the rapidly changing scene of advanced composites in construction. This volume focuses on the presentation of new concepts, techniques and case studies, which will lead to greater exploitation of advanced polymer composites and FRP materials for civil engineering infrastructure, rehabilitation and renewal. Presents new concepts, techniques and case studies
