Excerpt from Ground Water for Irrigation in the Vicinity of Enid, Oklahoma Rocks of Carboniferous age, known as the Red Beds, cover large areas in central and western Oklahoma. They consist principally of brick-red shales locally called red keel but include some thin layers of interbedded sandstones. They (lip 10 to 20 feet to the mile toward the west and southwest and are shown by deep-well sections to be of great thickness. A Well which is being drilled by the city of Enid 2 miles north Of town, in the nw. A sec. 29, North Enid Town ship, penetrated Over feet of red shale, and two wells drilled at El Reno, Canadian County, Okla., 60 miles south of Enid, were in the Red Beds for and feet, respectively.
