Then when the rebels invade the village, the teacher tells them a story which lasts seven nights, about a boy named Pip, and a convict . . .

Great Expectations is that the story of Pip, an orphan boy adopted by a blacksmith's family, who has good luck and great expectations, then loses both his luck and his expectations. Through this rise and fall, however, Pip learns the way to find happiness. He learns the meaning of friendship and therefore the meaning of affection and, of course, becomes a far better person for it. The story opens with the narrator, Pip, who introduces himself and describes a way younger Pip watching the gravestones of his parents.
