The Herero-German war led to the destruction of Herero society in all of its pre-war facets. Yet Herero society re-emerged, re-organizing itself around the structures and beliefs of the German colonial army and Rhenish missionary activity. Taking advantage of the South African invasion of Namibia in World War I the Herero established themselves in areas of their own choosing. The effective re-occupation of land by the Herero forced the new colonial state, anxious to maintain peace and cut costs, to come to terms with the existence of Herero society. The study ends in 1923 when the death and funeral of Samuel Maherero - first paramount of the Herero and then resistance leader - the catalyst that brought the disparate groups of Herero together to establish a single unitary Herero identity. A cross between Michael Pollan’s Food Rules and Adam Richman’s Food vs. Man, Raw Extreme Manifesto is one man’s journey into raw food extremism. With sensible tips, simple recipes, rules, and most importantly, results, Fred Ho’s book tells you everything you need to know about going totally raw—without spending all your money on expensive juicers or fancy groceries. Driven by a desire to become healthier and solve a myriad of health issues, Fred Ho begins his journey into raw food extremism, overcoming his skepticism by resisting the psychological matrix of dependency and addiction to cooked and industrial food production; by developing a small community circle of raw food enthusiasts (Raw Fight Club) seeking to solve a variety of ailments and maladies (diabetes, asthma, hypertension, obesity, and even multiple sclerosis and cancer); by opposing the hyper-marketing of “raw chic” (going raw is often affordable only to the affluent); and by devising a raw food commitment that spends almost no money. After just two weeks, he feels extraordinary results. Much more than twenty-five original recipes and tips about going raw and staying raw, this is an indispensable handbook for everyone who ever wondered if they have what it takes to change their lives and ultimately their society for the better. In the author’s own words about Raw Fight Club: “we make raw food dishes, share ideas, talk politics, and come up with strategies to change the world!”

This book was originally published in 1966. This detailed study of the history of South West AFrica up to the date of Maharero's death in 1890 was originally published in German and appeared in an English version for the first time in 1938 when it was recognised as the first standard work on the subject. The author's extensive ethnological and linguistic studies made him especially well equipped to give a detailed account of the country and its people, and of the customs and languages of the different tribes. A considerable part of the book deals with the gradual colonization of the country by European pioneers whose various adventures are recorded in a mass of 'old notes, letters, reports and diaries'; and the historical side is supplemented by an ethological account of the native tribes. This is a scholarly work which, with its regard for folklore and tribal tradition as well as for the facts of history, must recommend itself to all lovers of South West Africa.
