Excerpt from Glossary of Words in Use in Cornwall Of the dialect and pronunciation of the eastern part of the county I know from personal experience next to nothing, never having spent more than a few weeks in that locality, except that the vowels are broader and the consonants harsher than in West Com wall, and that it resembles the dialect of Devon. Excerpt from Randigal Rhymes and a Glossary of Cornish Words IN accordance with the expressed desire of many gentlemen of the neighbourhood, friends of our father, who were most anxious that his Verses and collection of Cornish Dialect Words should be given to the public, we have put together such of his works as we think may be generally useful and interesting. Himself a Cornishman, he took the greatest interest in the Dialect of his native County, specially that of West Cornwall, with which he was most familiar, having lived there for the greater part of his life. Excerpt from Glossary of Provincial and Local Words Used in England Provincial or Local Words are of three kinds, the first, either Saxon or Danish, in general grown obsolete from dis use, and the introduction of more fashionable terms; and, consequently, only retained in countries remote from the ca pital, where modern refinements do not easily find their way, and are not readily adopted. The second sort are words derived from some foreign lan guage, as Latin, French, or German; but so corrupted, by passing through the mouths of illiterate clowns, as to render their origin scarcely discoverable; corruptions of this kind being obstinately maintained by country people, who, like the old Monks, will never exchange their old mumpsimus for the new sumpsimus. The third are mere arbitrary words, not deducible from any primary source of language, but ludicrous nominations. Excerpt from A Glossary of the Words and Phrases of Cumberland The English language has no equivalent to the vowel sound in the way the word brust (burst) is pronounced. It is not the u, the 3, nor the i, but a kind of compromise between the e and the i. The word run is in a similar predicament, it being frequently pronounced in a half-way sound between win and ran, and partly approaching to ren, but not strictly coinciding with the sound of any of them. Excerpt from Glossary of Terms and Phrases THE "Glossary' of Terms and Phrases" is intended to bring together such words, expressions, quotations, etc., English or other, as arc among the more uncommon in current literature, and require, not for the scientific but for the ordinary reader, explanations, for the want of which the meaning of a sentence or a paragraph, even the drift of an argument, is often missed; explanations, moreover, not to be obtained without reference to, and perhaps tedious search among, a large and varied number of books, many of them not easily accessible. In short, the editor indulges the hope that this Glossary may supply all the information needed by general readers, who may wish to have a fair understanding of the text of any work in ordinary English literature. Of these terms and expressions some arc purely, some are more or less technical and scientific; some arc simply uncommon; some contain allusions mythological, historical, geographical; some fall under a very large class, which must be styled miscellaneous; some belong to other languages than our own. But in explaining the words themselves, no attempt has been made to enter further than is necessary into the nature of the things named. At the same time, the amount of genera! added to glossarial information must necessarily be very different in different eases. Excerpt from A Glossary of Words and Phrases Pertaining to the Dialect of Cumberland The present work is a second edition, revised and extended, of 1 Glossary of the Words and Phrases of Cumberland, published in White haven, in 1859, which has for some time been out of print. The changes in this new edition are numerous, both in the way of omission and addition. As regards the omissions, many words previously included Were merely corruptions or peculiar pronunciations of ordinary current English. These it has not been deemed necessary to retain. The rule of exclusion, however, has not been absolutely or rigorously observed, because some Cumbrian forms of common English cannot without ex planation be made intelligible to people living beyond the borders of the county. Excerpt from A Glossary of Words: Used in South-East Worcestershire This attempt to compile a Glossary of Words and Phrases used in South-East Worcestershire (the district around Evesham and Pershore), owes its origin, principally, to a perusal of Mrs. Chamberlains interesting 'Glossary of West Worcestershire Words, ' published by the English Dialect Society in 1882. Being a native of the district above indicated, and an enthusiastic lover of everything relating to the county of Worcester, I had for some years previously, been collecting scraps and fragments concerning the locality, but with no definite object in view; and I felt greatly delighted when I recognised in Mrs. Chamberlain's work, many of the old home words, sayings, and customs, which were so familiar to me in my younger days; but which had in many instances become almost forgotten. Although in the same county, I found that there were many words used in our locality which were not in use in West Worcestershire, and so not included in Mrs. Chamberlain's book. I therefore began systematically to note down all such words that I could think of, or that I otherwise met with; with the result that I am now able to submit to all who are interested in the subject of local dialects, and to the public generally, the present collection of South-East Worcestershire Words and Phrases. In doing so, I trust that I am contributing a minute quota of quaint (and possibly some few peculiar) words, towards the formation of a work which would be of the greatest interest and utility, viz., a complete Glossary of Local Words, Sayings, and Phrases used in every district in England. Excerpt from A Glossary of Glossary Country Words, in Use: With Their Etymology, and Affinity to Other Languages; And Occasional Notices of Local Customs and Popular Superstitions Local Customs and Popular Superstitions Our Northern words and terms, though Often disguised in different spelling and structure, bear strong affinity to the Scottish language. Indeed, the greater part Of them will be found to be in current use in each country. Even laying out of view the Opinion expressed by some writers, that the Scottish language is merely a dialect of the anglo-saxon, the similarity of words and phrases used both in the North of England and the South of Scotland, may be accounted for by the county of Northumberland, and other parts of the English territory, having anciently formed a portion of the sister kingdom. But it is to be observed, that a number of the words in this Glossary, which are unknown to the South, are in common use in the North of Scotland. It is true that the greater part of these may be traced to the French but hence the words used in Scotland may Often be explained and elucidated by reference to those Of the North of England.
