This book provides a multilateral view of Japanese management control systems (MCS), presents the frameworks of MCS theory, and integrates those systems based on quantitative and qualitative research. Readers will learn how Japanese MCS were investigated by researchers and why they chose the existing frameworks. Not only are the topics clarified with regard to Japanese MCS; empirical evidence from Japan is also provided. At the outset, the frameworks of MCS used by Japanese researchers are explained, and the reasons they choose those frameworks are investigated. Following that exploration, readers are shown a close examination of MCS, which are thought to be difficult to understand in Japan. In Japanese companies, however, these systems are generally used, so in other words Japanese companies use MCS without considering its frameworks. It is a baffling phenomenon, thus a fine topic of research. After a comprehensive review of the literature, the current status of Japanese MCS is presented by using both quantitative and qualitative research. By the end of the book, readers will have a firm grasp of how Japanese firms use MCS and what MCS means for Japanese companies.

As the world's third-ranking economic power, Japan's style of management, such as the lifetime employment system, the seniority system, and an enterprise union, has been well studied. However, little else is known about the Japanese management control systems (MCSs) and management accounting systems, which are significantly different from other economic powers. This book sheds light on Japanese MCSs and the differences with those of the United States, illustrated with examples from Mitsubishi Electric, Kao, and more. This book aids not only researchers in management accounting, but also provides more useful insight for international investors and management accountants that can prove useful in business management.

This book offers a meditation on the links between philosophy and its implementation, interpreting why and how a leader's "philosophy" strengthens his action predicated on the purposeful vision of life; and discusses the a hypothesis that performance control in management may be driven by transcendental and intrinsic motivations, contrasting with the traditional management control theory. It construes how Inamori's management philosophy disciplines accounting and finance management towards putting its basic tenets into practice. Examining, in particular, the history of Kyocera, the authors provide a contemplative look at a human centric philosophy, which will be of interest to scholars of management, corporate executives, and economists with a philosophical bent.

The first edition of Making Sense of Management set out to provide a fresh perspective on management that was both broad and critical, exploring how the disruptive and constructive potential of critical theory can be realized in organizations. Along the way, it has proven to be a landmark contribution to critical management studies. As well as setting the agenda for current research, this revised edition has been written to appeal to a broader readership and open up critical theory for the general management student. New sections on HRM, brands, identity, ethics and leadership have been fully developed alongside the rest of the text to reflect the current state of play in critical management studies. The second edition of Making Sense of Management will be of interest to students and researchers in critical management studies and students on general management courses with a critical perspective.
