A gritty, undersized player, Freddie Steinmark started at safety for the undefeated University of Texas Longhorns in 1969. In the thrilling "Game of the Century," a come-from-behind victory against Arkansas that ensured Texas the national championship, Steinmark played with pain in his left leg. Within a week of that game and after cancer was confirmed, his leg was amputated. Steinmark had quickly become a fan favorite at Texas, and his story captivated the nation. Written with unfettered access to the Steinmark family and archives, Freddie Steinmark: Faith, Family, Football is the exploration of a brief but full life, one that began humbly but ended on a grand stage. Book jacket.

The great footballers and coaches are rarely glimpsed from up close. They shield themselves from the tabloids, hide their personalities behind professionalism, and in the words of the cliché, 'do their talking on the pitch'. This book gets up close to them. The Football Menis not a series of celebrity profiles, and it doesn't attempt to unearth secrets in the players' private lives. Rather, it portrays these men as three-dimensional human beings. It describes their upbringings, the football cultures they grew up in, the way they play, and the baggage that they bring to their relationships at work. This multimillion-pound, multinational world is mostly inhabited by ordinary men. The profiles in this book are sometimes funny, but never breathless or sensational. Some of the profiles in this book are based on interviews; others are the results of time the author spent with that person; sometimes the profile is a story of a country. All are fascinating and shed light on their subject to reveal things you wouldn't expect. From one of the great sports writers of our time this is a penetrating and surprising collection of articles on the figures that have defined the modern sporting world.

What we remember most about our youth are the friends we grew up with. What we treasure most are the friends we still have from that special time and place. And when we are challenged with the conventional wisdom that friendship is too commonplace, too mundane to make a good story, we respond, Oh, but you dont know my friends! Freddy and Mike is the story of two friends growing up in the 1950s. An unlikely pair at first meeting, they become inseparable, surviving trials of fire by tapping unknown reservoirs of strength, and enjoying a secret which few discover. Freddy and Mike begins when the two ten-year-old boys meet in the small Midwestern town they call home. They come from different backgrounds. One belongs to the traditional family of that era where dad works and mom stays home to run the household. The other lives with his mother, his fathers whereabouts unknown. Mother and son suffer the double stigma of being poor and of having a working mother as the single provider. As the story progresses, each boy, in turn, learns that he can achieve what he thought was impossible if he depends on the other and accepts help that is offered without conditions. Laughter, pain and sorrow all play integral parts in forming and sustaining Freddy and Mike. And when the last page is read, the reaction will be a genuine smile. In todays world of sound-bite news, intimate conversations via cell phone, and 24/7 lives everywhere; friendships and relationships are hard to come by and even harder to maintain. Come live in Freddy and Mikes world for awhile. Then go see those who were so special to you, and can be again.

The internationally celebrated author of The Debt to Pleasure returns with this major, breakout novel -- scathing and subversive, sharply witty and brilliantly observed as it follows the lives and fortunes of a group of people in London that becomes connected in unforeseen ways. Pepys Road: an ordinary street in the capital. Today, through each letterbox along this ordinary street drops a card with a simple message: We Want What You Have. At forty, Roger Yount is blessed with an expensively groomed wife, two small sons and a powerful job in the city. Freddy Kano, teenage football sensation, has left a two-room shack in Senegal to follow his dream. Traffic warden Quentina has exchanged the violence of the police in Zimbabwe for the violence of the enraged middle classes. Elsewhere in the Capital, Zbigniew has come from Warsaw to indulge the super-rich in their interior decoration whims. These are just some of the unforgettable characters in Lanchester's unputdownable masterpiece novel of contemporary urban life.

This book, available in paperback due to popular demand, is an ethnographic account of English football fans, based upon sixteen years' participant observation. The author identifies a distinct sub-culture of supporter – the ‘carnival fan’ – who dominated the travelling support of the three teams observed – Manchester United, Blackpool and the England national team. This accessible account follows these groups at home and abroad, describing their interpretations, motivations and behaviour and challenging a number of the myths about ‘hooliganism’ and crowd control. The text will be of value to anyone studying, researching or interested in ethnographic modes of enquiry or the behaviour of football fans. In particular it will be of value to anyone involved in the academic disciplines of policing, criminal justice, sociology, criminology, sports studies and research methods. It also makes recommendations for the management of football crowds that will be of use to practitioners involved in policing, crowd control and event management.

This is an anthology of humorous poetry that has been 40 years in the making. I'm not going as far back as my silly limerick about a gorilla which I wrote when I was nine or ten but I do remember the pleasure I got in composing it and in making other children laugh with it. I suppose my 'serious' attempts at humorous poetry began at Bradford University where I was the unofficial resident poet at a fortnightly folk club in the cellar of the Catholic chaplaincy. I felt obliged to inflict my warped observations and tortuous puns on whoever remained in the room. I love the way a whole poem can grow from just one observation, one comment, one pun. I find that developing that idea and playing around with words, even parts of words, to be a deeply satisfying process. I use humorous poetry as a way of expressing my opinions, feelings or personality in a brief, easily accessible and hopefully entertaining way. Enjoy/endure.
