Excerpt from Fifty-Ninth Annual Report of the Trustees for the Taunton State Hospital: For the Year Ending November 30, 1912 Six hundred and twenty-six patients have been admitted dur ing the year, 346 men and 280 women. The whole number under treatment was an increase Of 80 over the figures Of the preceding year. Of the 502 cases dismissed during the year 47 had recovered and 52 had become Capable Of self-support; 172 died. There was an epidemic Of diphtheria among the nurses, fortunately with no fatal results. Tuberculosis caused 17 deaths. In view of the repeated criticism that proper attention is not paid to the teeth Of patients in our State hospitals we feel obliged to refer here to the large amount of work regularly done by the dentist to the institution as mentioned in the superintendent's report. It represents the practice at this hospital for the past twenty years. An outside oculist is also employed to examine and correct defects in the eyes Of the patients. There has been no flagging in the beneficial direction Of the employment Of patients to which we have Often referred as the special feature Of the activities Of the institution. In fact there has been an increased amount Of work accomplished in the indus trial department Over that of the preceding year which is not accounted for by the increase in the number of patients.
