Robert Morgan, a native of the North Carolina mountains and a widely published poet, has been writing essays about his craft for more than twenty years. This book brings together some of his most thought-provoking pieces, reflections upon poetry from the dual perspective of poet and critic. Morgan begins by examining in succinct and challenging essays the elements of poetry and poetry writing in general, emphasizing the poet’s responsibility to provide, as the title suggest, “good measure.” Good measure, Morgan cautions, means neither facile spontaneity nor the sort of politicization that most often, he says, forces poets into poses of stylized enlightenment and response. Morgan goes on to discuss specific poets with a craftsman’s calm authority. His reflections upon the American tradition in poetry include a tribute to William Cullen Bryant, an illuminating piece on Robinson Jeffers, and studies of the contemporary poets A.R. Ammons, Russell Edson, and Fred Chappell. His look at individual poets also includes dazzling close readings of piece by the French poet Jean Follain. In “The Transfigured Body” and “Mica,” Morgan presents excerpts form his own notebooks, meditations jotted down during the process of composing poems These notes made in passing provide intriguing insights into the work of poetry. Finally, there are interviews with Morgan by other poets: lively discussion of southern writing, the experience of being a poet in America today, and the influence of Morgan’s Appalachian background on his own vocation and career as a poet. Good Measure sparkles with honesty, deep intelligence, and most of all Morgan’s conviction that a passionate striving for a unattainable perfection is its own reward. The indifference of the public, the success of the third-rate, the scorn of critical theorists for whom literary quality is irrelevant—none of these is an excuse “for not saying the truth with wit, and for not making poems that will shine long after we have ceased our worry and hope.” Poets, scholars, and casual readers alike will find Good Measure a rich source of inspiration and wisdom.

Rare is the person who, at some time or another, has not found himself/herself pondering one or more of the four great questions of life Who am I? Where did I come from What is my purpose? And, Where am I going? Such questions invariably arise when there is some crisis in ones personal affairs, but due to the emotional confusion that usually accompanies such crises it is difficult to reason out answers to such profound metaphysical questions. Answers appear in the worlds religions, but there is such a variance of opinion between the different theologies that trying to find a definitive solution among all of those divergent teachings only develops more confusion. There is, however, a common inner or mystical foundation to all religions that supports their man-made dogmas, creeds and rituals which provides the clear answers all of us are looking for. This consistency and enduring nature of the ideas that form this foundation or ground of religion has resulted in those ideas being collectively referred to as the Perennial Philosophy of mysticism. There can be some difficulty, however, in finding the answers within this Perennial Philosophy because the concepts are metaphysical in nature; and this means they are beyond the range of our normal linear way of thinking and, so, not readily obvious. They are, so to speak, locked-up, and a key is needed for us to be able to discover their wisdom. In this book, The Four Great Questions of Life, Dr. Judd provides that key and, Clearly shows where these answers appear in various religious teachings Uses down-to-earth illustrations to explain what they mean Shows the universal application of the ideas embodied in the Christian Trinity Describes how the Law of Karma (cause/effect) and Reincarnation are compatible with Christianity Provides a logical explanation and definition that removes the mystery of the nature of good and evil. For anyone who has ever struggled to find any meaning in such questions as, Who am I? What is my purpose in living? and so on, this book offers clear-cut and practical answers which, irrespective of ones religious background, show the way to a happy and fulfilling life.

The body of Christ, as a whole, is still struggling with the issue of finances. Some feel they must by poor to be holy, and on the other side of the spectrum, some feel it is just about them getting richer. Both are incorrect. Prosperity is all about being able to fund kingdom assignments. This book gives the reader not only the right perspective on finances but also an understanding on how to operate in sowing and reaping to maximize the financial harvest so God's plan can move forward. Just think, if the lack of money was not an obstacle, what could be accomplished?

Since the publication of the bestselling Sounding the Seasons, Malcolm Guite has repeatedly been asked for more sonnets. This new collection offers a sequence of 50 sonnets that focus on many passages in the Gospels: the Beatitudes, parables and miracles, teachings on the Kingdom, and the ‘hard sayings’ - Jesus’ challenging demands with which we wrestle. In addition this collection includes: •A sequence of seven sonnets on 'The Wilderness', exploring mysterious stories of divine encounter such as Jacob’s wrestling with the angel. •Poetic reflections on music, hospitality and ecology. •Seven short poems celebrating the days of creation. •A biblical index pairing the poems with scripture readings for use in worship.
