This Safety Guide is intended primarily for use with land based stationary thermal nuclear power plants but it may, in parts, have a wider applicability to other nuclear facilities. It provides recommendations and guidance on the possible format and content of a SAR in support of a request to the State regulatory body for authorization to construct and or operate a nuclear power plant. As such, it contains recommendations on meeting the requirements of Safety guide GS-R-1 "Legal and governmental infrastructure for nuclear, radioactive waste and transport safety" (2000, ISBN 9201008007)

Genre: Technology & Engineering
ISBN: 9201417217

This Safety Guide provides recommendations on the safety assessment for research reactors in the authorization process, and on performance of safety analysis and preparation of the safety analysis report. It also incorporates the relevant lessons learned from the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant and elaborates guidance on interfaces between nuclear safety and nuclear security. The recommendations in this Safety Guide are intended for operating organizations of research reactors; it can also be used by designers performing a safety assessment for a research reactor. Furthermore, this guide provides useful guidance for regulatory bodies performing a review and assessment of submitted safety analysis reports as an important document within authorization process. This Safety Guide is a revision of IAEA Safety Standards Series No. SSG-20, which it supersedes.

Member States intending to introduce a nuclear power programme will need to pass through several phases during the implementation. Experience shows that careful planning of the objectives, roles, responsibilities, interfaces and tasks to be carried out in different phases of a nuclear project is important for success. This publication presents a harmonized approach that may be used to structure the owner/operator management system and establish and manage nuclear projects and their development activities irrespective of the adopted approach. It has been developed from shared management practices and consolidated experiences provided by nuclear project management specialists through a series of workshops and working groups organized by the IAEA. The resultant publication presents a useful framework for the management of nuclear projects from initiation to closeout and captures international best practices.

Best Estimate Safety Analysis for Nuclear Power Plants

Deterministic safety analysis is an important tool for confirming the adequacy and efficiency of provisions within the defence in depth concept for the safety of nuclear power plants (NPPs). IAEA Safety Standards Series No. NS-R-1.2 and Safety Reports Series No. 23 recommend, as one of the options for demonstrating the inclusion of adequate safety margins, the use of best estimate computer codes with realistic input data in combination with the evaluation of uncertainties in the calculation results. The evaluation of uncertainties is an issue of considerable complexity, and this Safety Report has been developed to complement the existing publications. It provides more detailed information on the methods available for the evaluation of uncertainties in deterministic safety analysis of NPPs and practical guidance in the use of these methods.

Periodic Safety Review for Research Reactors

Author: IAEA
Publisher: International Atomic Energy Agency
Total Pages: 128
Release: 2020-12-03
Genre: Technology & Engineering
ISBN: 920105422X

This publication provides information and guidance on the establishment of a process for periodic safety review for research reactors, including preparation, conduct of the review and reporting of results. In addition, it covers the regulatory assessment of these results. The publication also provides information on the experience of Member States in establishing and implementing periodic safety reviews of research reactors, including implementation of reasonable and practical improvements based on these reviews.

Benchmarking Against Experimental Data of Neutronics and Thermohydraulic Computational Methods and Tools for Operation and Safety Analysis of Research Reactors

Genre: Technology & Engineering
ISBN: 9789201096197

This publication presents the results of an IAEA coordinated research project (CRP). The benchmark analysis performed under this CRP covered steady state and transient conditions for research reactors across a range of designs, power levels, operating regimes and experimental facilities. The results obtained by the individual CRP participants are consolidated for each benchmark specification and conclusions are drawn on the specifications, modelling approaches and user effects, and computer codes used in the analysis. This publication supplements IAEA Technical Report Series No. 480, Research Reactor Benchmarking Database: Facility Specification and Experimental Data, which was developed within the same CRP. The publication is intended for use by operating organizations, researchers, regulatory bodies, designers and other interested parties involved in the safety, operation and utilization of research reactors. The individual country reports are available on the attached CD¬ROM.

This book captures the principles of safety evaluation as practiced in the regulated light-water reactor nuclear industry, as established and stabilized over the last 30 years. It is expected to serve both the current industry and those planning for the future. The work's coverage of the subject matter is the broadest to date, including not only the common topics of modeling and simulation, but also methods supporting the basis for the underlying assumptions, the extension to radiological safety, what to expect in a licensing review, historical perspectives and the implication for new designs. This text is an essential resource for practitioners and students, on the current best-practices in nuclear power plant safety and their basis. Contributors of this work are subject matter experts in their specialties, much of which was nurtured and inspired by Prof. Larry Hochreiter, a prominent nuclear safety pioneer.Related Link(s)
