Excerpt from Foreign Crops and Markets, Vol. 59: September 5, 1949 The l9h9 crop forecast is about 3 percent below the 19h? Harvest but still 15 percent above the prewar, 1935-39, average. The decrease in production estimated for China more than accounts for the overall decline. The combined production for all countries, excluding China, would show a slight increase over l9h8. Since reliable estimates are still unavailable for China and several other important producing coun tries the present forecast is subject to considerable change. Excerpt from Foreign Crops and Markets, Vol. 59: October 24, 1949 The corn harvest in the Soviet Union is estimated to be below average principally because of reduced acreage, though yields were also believed to be below average. The harvest in Asia appears to be slightly below average as well as below the 19h8 outturn, despite increased acreage. The reduction is distributed among a number of countries with no large changes reported. No official estimate is available for China, the largest producer of the area. Best information available, however, indicates that the pro duction there may be only a little below the 19a8 crop. Outturns were reported above average in both the Indian Union and Pakistan, the second area of importance.
