A deeply personal call to action for women of color to find power from within and to join together in community, advocating for a new corporate environment where we all belong—and are accepted—on our own terms. Women of color comprise one of the fastest-growing segments in the corporate workforce, yet often we are underrepresented—among the first, few, or only ones in a department or company. For too long, corporate structures, social zeitgeist, and cultural conditioning have left us feeling exhausted and downtrodden, believing that in order to “fit in” and be successful, we must hide or change who we are. As a former senior partner at a large global services firm, Deepa Purushothaman experienced these feelings of isolation and burnout. She met with hundreds of other women of color across industries and cultural backgrounds, eager to hear about their unique and shared experiences. In doing so, she has come to understand our collective setbacks—and the path forward in achieving our goals. Business must evolve—and women of color have the potential to lead that transformation. We must begin by pushing back against toxic messaging—including the things we tell ourselves—while embracing the valuable cultural viewpoints and experiences that give us unique perspectives at work. By fully realizing our own strengths, we can build collective power and use it to confront microaggressions, outdated norms, and workplace misconceptions; create cultures where belonging is never conditional; and rework corporations to be genuinely inclusive to all. The First, the Few, the Only is a road map for us to make a profound impact within and outside our organizations while ensuring that our words are heard, our lived experiences are respected, and our contributions are finally valued.

Published just months before the author's suicide in 1950, this novel has since become one of Pavese's most sought-after books. In this classic, a successful couturier returns to Turin, the city in which she grew up, at the end of World War II. Opening a salon of her own leads her into a nihilistic circle of young hedonists, including the charismatic Rosetta, whose tragic death forms the novel's climax. But Turin itself is at the heart of the story, its pervading melancholy deftly rendered by a master craftsman.

A Washington Post Notable Book of 2017. Deborah Tannen's bestselling You Just Don't Understand: Conversations Between Women and Men made us aware of the deep and subtle meanings behind the words we say. She has since explored the way we talk at work, in arguments, to our mothers and our daughters. Now she turns to that most intense, precious and potential minefield: women's friendships. Best friend, old friend, good friend, new friend, neighbour, fellow mother at the school gate, workplace confidante: women's friendships are crucial. A friend can be like a sister, daughter, mother, mentor, therapist or confessor. She can also be the source of pain and betrayal. From casual chatting to intimate confiding, from talking about problems to sharing funny stories, there are patterns of communication and miscommunication that affect friendships. Tannen shows how even the best of friends - with the best intentions - can say the wrong thing, how the ways women friends talk can bring friends closer or pull them apart, but also how words can repair the damage done by words. She explains the power of women friends who show empathy and can just listen; how women use talk to connect - and to subtly compete; how fears of rejection can haunt friendships; how social media is reshaping relationships. Exploring what it means to be friends, helping us hear what we are really saying, understanding how we connect to other people; this illuminating and validating book gets inside the language of one of most women's life essentials - female friendships.

Not For Women Only: Short Stories for a Lazy Day By: Albert Zygier Albert Zygier is a retired graphic designer with a passion for writing short stories as well as painting landscapes and still life in water soluble oils. (Much easier for clean up.) It wasn’t till he joined a writers group that he decided to put his stories together for a book. His stories are about romance, adventure, history, and a war. They are sad and poignant and funny. They are about how people meet and how they fall in love. We have civilians, we have soldiers, we have young and old. Zygier was born before WWII in Poland (Poproszę kanapkę Kielbasa) and when the Nazis invaded, he and his parents escaped into Russia (Borsht pozhalusta?) From there, we were sent to an intriguing little country called Tajikistan. (Iltimos bitta choy?) In New York City’s School of Industrial Art, he majored in cartooning and after graduation joined the US Army where he spent a year and a half in Korea, (Kimchi, anyone?) there, he contributed a number of cartoons for the local Army Newspaper the Seoul Times. For the rest of his tour he was assigned to the 1st Armored Division, in Ft Polk, La. (Shrimp and Grits y’all?) Albert Zygier lives in New York City (Bagels and lox.) with Ellen, his wife of 56 years, a daughter Roni, and granddaughter Annie who one day will be a Broadway Star.
