Players need to realize that what they are putting into their body is equally important as the physical training they are doing. Thanks Roxanne for laying it out in such an easily digestible book form!! Lance Pitlick, Former NHLer. As a youth hockey coach, I find that the majority of young elite athletes do not know how to fuel their bodies properly. And much of that begins with the need to educate their parents. Roxanne's book provides the core principles of sports nutrition. It also provides numerous examples and suggestions for others to follow. This is a great read for aspiring young athletes and their parents. Travis Howe, Youth Hockey Coach. "As a hockey mom to a growing teen player, I love that this book provides quick reference suggestions for the healthiest (and quickest) solutions to eating around a busy hockey schedule! It also goes beyond and provides the supporting information and specifics for a host of health issues! Awe-some go to book for healthier skaters both now and in the future! Thank you for addressing this ongoing concern for hockey families!" Shannon Gilbert, Hockey Mom.

Pilot Study Evaluating Application of Nutrition Education by Adolescent Ice Hockey Players

Pilot Study Evaluating Application of Nutrition Education by Adolescent Ice Hockey Players

Genre: Hockey players

Background: Physical growth/development during adolescence increases energy, protein, vitamin, and mineral needs. Insufficient nutrient intakes may result in stunted stature and sexual maturation delays. Exercise, plus growth requirements, demand food consumption providing sufficient quantities of micronutrients, as these control essential metabolic pathways for synthesis of ATP and new tissue. Increase risk of injuries may result from inadequate nutrition compensating for physical activity demands. Varsity ice hockey players and their parents sought information on food/beverage recommendations before practice/games to maintain growth, increase energy, and enhance performance. Objectives: Determine whether varsity ice hockey players demonstrate improved selection of appropriate pre-exercise foods/beverages after receiving brief nutrition education and a quick reference handout. Methods/Procedures: A quasi-experimental, pilot study was performed on an 18-member, varsity ice-hockey team, (ages 14-18) combined from three schools. Recruitment for volunteer subjects occurred through coach announcement to players and email to parents. Five subjects participated. Within-subjects data collection included food records gathered before/after the entire team received the nutrition education and handout. Data from Food Records 1 & 2 were compared, using a scoring rubric, for improvements in food/beverage choices. This demonstrated application of knowledge gained. Food score factors included carbohydrate content; preparation method; fat content of dairy/condiments/proteins; and fruit/vegetable inclusion. Beverage score factors included total fluid content, caffeine content, and added sugar. Results/Conclusion: Food scores remained same/improved 40%, while beverage choices improved 80% (mode: 2 points). Research regarding application of knowledge gained expands on this field of study. Survey of population-specific knowledge needs may further improve application.
