The technical guidelines are written in a short, direct, sometimes telegraphic style, in order to keep the volume of the document to a minimum and to facilitate updating. The guidelines are divided into two parts. The first part makes general recommendations on how best to move germplasm of the crop concerned and mentions available intermediate quarentine facilities when relevant. The second part covers the important pests and diseases of quarentine concern. The information given on a particular pest or disease does not pretend to be exhaustive but concentrates on those aspects that are most relevante to quarentine. Where possible, acronyms for viruses are according to Hull et. al (1991).

This handbook contains 13 chapters covering banana (Musa and Ensete) diseases caused by various groups of causal agents and disorders caused by unknown and known factors. Topics discussed include fungal diseases of the foliage, root, corm, pseudostem, fruit (pre- and postharvest), as well as diseases caused by bacteria and phytoplasmas, viruses and nematode pathogens. Information is given on their economic impact, distribution, symptoms, disease cycle and epidemiology, host reaction, and control. Non-infectious disorders, mineral deficiencies, injuries caused by adverse climate and extreme weather, chemical injuries and genetic abnormalities are also described. Topic on quarantine and the safe movement of Musa germplasm is also given. This book, like the last, is for all 'banana doctors' around the world. It is hoped that it serves as a useful field and laboratory guide plus a source of information to all those investigating problems of the banana, abacá and enset crops.

Plant viruses are significant as they affect our food supply and are capable of rapidly spreading to new plant species, so a comprehensive study of plant viruses is important in understanding their pathogenesis and prevention. This book focuses on the plant virus evolution, their molecular classification, epidemics and management. The key features in the book includes genome organization, translation and replication, virus-coded proteinases, structure of virus particles, cell receptors and host range, the RNA polymerase, quasispecies dynamics and virus evolution, and its natural habitats.

Plant Cell and Tissue Culture gives an exhaustive account of plant cell culture and genetic transformation, including detailed chapters on all major field and plantation crops. Part A presents a comprehensive coverage of all necessary laboratory techniques for the initiation, nutrition, maintenance and storage of plant cell and tissue cultures, including discussions on these topics, as well as on morphogenesis and regeneration, meristem and shoot tip culture, plant protoplasts, mutant cell lines, variation in tissue cultures, isogenic lines, fertilization control, cryopreservation, transformation, and the production of secondary metabolites. Part B then proceeds into detail on the specific in vitro culture of specific crops, including cereals, legumes, vegetables, potatoes, other roots and tubers, oilseeds, temperate fruits, tropical fruits, plantation crops, forest trees and ornamentals. Plant Cell and Tissue Culture is, and is likely to remain, the laboratory manual of choice, as well as a source of inspiration and a guide to all workers in the field.
