Excerpt from Rambles in Europe: In a Series of Familiar Letters When the writer of the following letters left home for a short tour in the Old World he promised some friends an occasional letter for the periodicals of which they were the editors. He endeavored to fulfil this engagement, and a number of these letters were issued in the Zion's Herald, and others in the Ladies' Repository, published in Cincinnati, Ohio. Some of the letters were brought home by the writer, and subsequently published. It was his practice to take notes of all that interested him; and these rough and imperfect sketches were subsequently filled up and brought into their present shape. "Letters from England" is a masterpiece of observation written by the famous Czech writer, Karel Capek. These humorous and insightful letters and drawings were designed to describe Europe's oldest democracy to the citizens of Europe's newest; Capek's countrymen. Within its pages he suggests the existence of a deep connection between his people and the those of his study, and writes with a bemused admiration for England and the English. A fascinating and important piece of Czech literature, "Letters from England" would make for a great addition to any bookshelf, and is one not to be missed by fans and collectors of Capek's work. The Leopard, published posthumously in 1958, was one of the most important works of fiction to appear in the Italian language in the twentieth century. Between 1925 and 1930, its author, Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, wrote a number of letters to his cousins Casimiro and Lucio Piccolo in which he describes his travels around Europe (London, Paris, Zurich, Berlin). The letters, here published in English for the first time, display much of Lampedusa's distinctive style present in his later work: not only the razor-sharp introspection, but also a wicked sense of humour, playful in its description of the comédie humaine.

Veronica Franco (whose life is featured in the motion picture Dangerous Beauty) was a sixteenth-century Venetian beauty, poet, and protofeminist. This collection captures the frank eroticism and impressive eloquence that set her apart from the chaste, silent woman prescribed by Renaissance gender ideology. As an "honored courtesan", Franco made her living by arranging to have sexual relations, for a high fee, with the elite of Venice and the many travelers—merchants, ambassadors, even kings—who passed through the city. Courtesans needed to be beautiful, sophisticated in their dress and manners, and elegant, cultivated conversationalists. Exempt from many of the social and educational restrictions placed on women of the Venetian patrician class, Franco used her position to recast "virtue" as "intellectual integrity," offering wit and refinement in return for patronage and a place in public life. Franco became a writer by allying herself with distinguished men at the center of her city's culture, particularly in the informal meetings of a literary salon at the home of Domenico Venier, the oldest member of a noble family and a former Venetian senator. Through Venier's protection and her own determination, Franco published work in which she defended her fellow courtesans, speaking out against their mistreatment by men and criticizing the subordination of women in general. Venier also provided literary counsel when she responded to insulting attacks written by the male Venetian poet Maffio Venier. Franco's insight into the power conflicts between men and women and her awareness of the threat she posed to her male contemporaries make her life and work pertinent today.
