The texts of these journals and of part of the appended proclamations are from photographic copies of the original manuscripts which were sent, in accordance with instructions to the colonial governors, to the home authorities in England and are now preserved among the Colonial Office papers in the Public Record Office of Great Britain, London. The texts of volumes 1-4 of this series were obtained mostly from the journals and proclamations in the Public Record Office and, to a lesser extent, from several surviving volumes of manuscript journals in the Virginia State Library.
