Jenna Bush Hager, the former first daughter and granddaughter, #1 New York Times bestselling author, and coanchor of the Today show, shares moving, funny stories about her beloved grandparents and the wisdom they passed on that has shaped her life. To the world, George and Barbara Bush were America’s powerful president and influential first lady. To Jenna Bush Hager, they were her beloved Gampy and Ganny, who taught her about respect, humility, kindness, and living a life of passion and meaning—timeless lessons that continue to guide her. In Midland, Texas, Jenna’s maternal grandparents, Harold and Jenna Welch—Pa and Grammee—a home builder and homemaker, lived a quieter life outside the national spotlight. Yet their influence was no less indelible to their granddaughter. Throughout Jenna’s childhood and adolescence, the Welches taught her the name of every star in the sky, the way a dove uses her voice—teaching her to appreciate the beauty in the smallest things. Now the mother of three young children, Jenna pays homage to her grandparents in this collection of heartwarming, intimate personal essays. Filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable stories, Everything Beautiful in Its Time captures the joyous and bittersweet nature of life itself. Jenna reflects on the single year in which she and her family lost Barbara and George H. W. Bush, and Jenna Welch. With the light, self-deprecating charm of the bestselling Sisters First—cowritten with her twin sister, Barbara—Jenna reveals how they navigated this difficult period with grace, faith, and nostalgic humor, uplifted by their grandparents’ sage advice and incomparable spirits. In this moving book, Jenna remembers the past, cherishes the present, and prepares for the future—providing a wealth of anecdotes and lessons for her own children and all of us. Poignant and humorous, intimate and sincere, Everything Beautiful in Its Time is a warm and wonderful celebration of the enduring power of family and an exploration of the things that truly matter most. “As long as I’m alive, my grandparents will not be forgotten. . . . I hear their voices in the letters they sent me and in my memories. They offer comfort, support, and guidance, and I will listen to them always.”

Lately I feel like an astronaut out on a space walk – constantly praying the tube attaching me to the ship doesn't snap and send me flying into outer darkness. The only good thing about having a mother with cancer is that people are willing to let you get away with pretty much anything. Like failing a Latin test. Or being late to class. Or skipping tennis practice. But there's one thing Edna's fairly certain even she can't get away with – her burgeoning romance with Mr. Howland, her fourth-period Ceramics teacher. That day when Mr. Howland kissed her in his office, she felt like she was floating, like she could levitate right out of her skin. It's Mr. Howland, with his tousled blond hair and his beautiful guitar and his spot-on impression of Dracula, who makes Edna feel happy for the first time in a long time. But what does Mr. Howland want? And how does Edna really feel – about her mother, about Mr. Howland, about moving forward? Set in New Jersey in the 1980s, this is a piercing story about decisions both heart-wrenching and wonderful, and how life and love so often lead us down unexpected paths.

The Bible says that God makes all things beautiful in their time, but when we look around today we see a broken and marred world. Our reality is so often the "not beautiful" that it's hard to trust that God can make our mess into something good. So how do we live with hope for a future redemption of all things? In Searching for Spring, Christine Hoover takes readers on a treasure hunt for beauty in both familiar and unexpected places. Framed by the changing seasons, this journey will heighten readers' senses and awaken their affections for the creator of it all. For all who are in the midst of suffering, who find their faith withering, who are questioning whether God is at work--or even present--as they wait for something in their lives to become beautiful, this book will be a welcome reminder that God never stops his redemptive work and that there is a time for everything under heaven.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 When my daughter, Mila, was three and a half, she went limp and boneless. She was able to fiercely kick the pavement with her tiny sneakered feet and swing her little hands. The cause of all this rage. Her grandmother and mother wouldn’t buy her a pink pig watch at a store.

Introduction I still remember the first time I heard about Vickies stroke. My husband and I were on a mission trip in Florida, working with an international Bible translation team. Emails began to pop up on my computer screen with fragmentary pieces of information from home. Vickies dogs had been viciously attacked by neighborhood dogs and were in emergency surgery. Vickie asked us to pray for the recovery of her precious pets. Then the news got dramatically, unbelievably worse. Vickie herself had had a major stroke and the prognosis was not good, recovery uncertain. Information was suddenly sparse from the hospital as John and we (my husband and I) waited for the medical tests and for time to give us some idea of what was ahead for Vickie. It had been only the previous Sunday that John and Vickie had done another of their beautiful choral duets at our home church. It was less than six months since we had celebrated with John and Vickie at their wedding and reception. Vickie was too young to have a stroke. John and Vickie had just begun a new life together after suffering through broken relationships in both of their pasts. How could God allow such a thing to happen to such a couple? As I worked on the sermon I was to deliver back home the next Sunday, projected to be on the joy of the Lord, I was seized with doubts. Could I proclaim this joy with such a heavy heart? Could the congregation receive the promise of joy as we wept and waited and prayed? It was John Shermans blog that showed us the way. He began to chronicle the medical, emotional, and spiritual struggles that Vickie and he were experiencing, beginning that very first day. He drew on his deep knowledge of the scriptures. As time passed and events unfolded, John listened and considered and reflected on the painful times and the hopeful times, the frustrations with medical and insurance problems as well as the unexpected joys of love and service received from friends and hospital staff. His words and Vickies indomitable spirit through very difficult circumstances drew an ever-increasing Facebook audience, with dozens of people near and far uplifted and encouraged by their endurance and trust in the Lord. Johns eloquence in expressing all of these realities was something seldom seen on social media, something that seemed truly inspired by the Holy Spirit. I recommend John and Vickies story for your reading. If youre dealing with a similar medical issue, youll find it informative as well as encouraging. If youre just trying to live a joyful and victorious life, youll be uplifted and inspired by one couples overcoming journey toward recovery and restoration. My favorite text about joy comes from Nehemiah 8:10: Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength. At the time this was written, the city of Jerusalem was in ruins and enemies were encircling and numerous. Nehemiah helped the people understand that when times were tough, those were the times they needed joy the most. John and Vickies story is ultimately a story of finding sustaining strength through experiencing the joy of the Lords promises and presence. Thats a message all of us need to hear. In Christ, Rev. Marie B. Allen Congregational Life and Discipleship Pastor New Town United Methodist Church Williamsburg, Virginia Friends, I know many of you are asleep now. Vickie has had a stroke and has no feeling or movement in her left side. As her doctor said, this is a life-changing episode, but I am praying for his light and glory to shine even in a dark moment. Thank you all for your continued prayers and support as we navigate through this present uncertainty. As I learn more, I promise to update you with what I know. My apologies, Facebook cant convey these thoughts with all that is filling my heart now. God bless you (John).
