This book presents Integrated Thematic Instruction (ITI), a model for implementing a "brain-compatible" learning environment for students and teachers using a year-long theme to organize curriculum content and skills. The book's introduction identifies six "mismemes" (or mistaken ideas) that have hindered educational reform, and proposes seven "new memes" (or foundational premises) for education reform that are consistent with brain research and children's developmental characteristics. Also identified are eight brain-compatible implementation elements to create an environment that will enhance children's performance and provide the basis for successful learning experience. Chapter 1 then describes the three principles of the ITI model: that brain research must become the basis for decisions to improve education, that teaching is an art and science that must implement brain research in the classroom, and that curriculum development must occur at the classroom level based on the classroom teacher's understanding of the learners and community. Chapters 2 through 9 explain the eight brain-compatible implementation elements and how they can be applied to learning. The eight elements are: (1) absence of threat; (2) meaningful content; (3) choices; (4) adequate time; (5) enriched environment; (6) collaboration; (7) immediate feedback; and (8) mastery (application). Chapter 10 describes a brain-compatible curriculum, one that emphasizes pattern-seeking and program-building. Chapters 11 through 13 describe three steps in curriculum making: creating a year-long theme, determining the key concepts and skills to be mastered within year-long themes, and creating and using inquiries. Chapter 14 shows how the ITI model is not incompatible with teaching reading, writing, and mathematics skills. Finally, chapter 15 argues the need for personal transition if change is to be made. Five appendices present sample materials for building an ITI program. A glossary is included. Contains 35 references. (TM)

No matter what you teach or how long you've been teaching, The Interdisciplinary Teacher's Handbookwill help you inspire the curiosity and motivation at the heart of students' best learning experiences. True advocates of localized, exploration-based methodology, Tchudi and Lafer present a thoughtful approach to interdisciplinary teaching with lots of advice on developing your own program and curriculum. Rather than reduce interdisciplinary education to either "theory" or "practice," Tchudi and Lafer offer a full explanation of how the two areas can work together. They provide a rationale for interdisciplinary teaching so that you can understand the "why" before accepting the "how." Since the teacher's attitude is as important as the student's, Tchudi and Lafer include brief exercises that ask you to reflect on your most powerful learning experiences so that you can discover ways in which interdisciplinary methods match your natural thought processes. These "Intermusings" enable you to introduce new methods with an experiential understanding of how underlying theories work. Tchudi and Lafer never lose sight of the day-to-day difficulties teachers and administrators face. They offer practical information on several levels. The second part of the book is filled with "Interdisciplinary Jumpstarters," ideas for organizing interdisciplinary projects on a number of topics, complete with lists of additional materials. Throughout the book, Tchudi and Lafer suggest resources for interdisciplinary teaching that are commonly overlooked, such as local businesses, government agencies, and people and places with histories and stories to tell. Administrators and teachers at all levels and from all disciplines will find inspiration and practical support in The Interdisciplinary Teacher's Handbook.

We know that educators and education systems at large face countless decisions every day. We also know that grounding educational decisions in research can improve the likelihood of desirable teaching and learning outcomes, as well as reduce the likelihood of unintended consequences. Research is just one among many types of evidence used in educational decision-making, however. So being “evidence informed” is as much about engaging with research evidence as it is engaging with practice-based evidence (e.g., professional judgment) and data-based evidence (e.g., school performance data). How can educators become evidence-informed? In our view, the best approach is to learn from examples from experts of how research can be integrated with these other types of evidence, and so regularly inform our own everyday practice. With that in mind, this practical handbook offers 16 illuminating chapters that provide a wealth of advice and perspectives on the subject written by North American educators who are striving to realize the idea of research-informed practice. Key themes – reflective practitioners, networks and collaboration, trust -emerge to help teachers formalize, prioritize and mobilize the use of research-evidence in schools.

This is a bold new view of science for the classroom. Based on Susan Kovalik's Integrated Thematic Instruction model, it provides step-by-step directions for integrating the areas of science (physical, earth, & life science plus technology) into students' daily science study so that what goes on inside the classroom accurately represents science as it is encountered in the real world. Centered on "first hand" rather than "hands on" approaches, the book provides step-by-step how-to's for developing curriculum (year-long theme, key points & inquiries) & selecting the most effective instructional strategies for implementing a powerful, brain-compatible science program. Chapters include: "Science, the Most Brain-Compatible of All Subjects" - an overview of five notions of how the brain learns based on recent brain research; "The Scientific Thinking Processes" - defines the seven scientific thinking processes & their brain research underpinnings; "Integrated Thematic Instruction: The Model"- describes the curricular & instructional elements of the ITI model; "Creating a Year-Long Theme"- discusses the differences betweeen "units" & year-long themes; provides examples & how-to steps; "Identifying Key Points"- how to identify the essential core to be learned by all students; examples & how-to's provided; "Developing Inquiries"- how to develop "first hand" rather than hands-on activities; & "Instructional Strategies"- how to make learning happen.

Bringing theory and practice together and applying a model focusing on Esteem, Empathy, and Equity, the authors encourage reflection and discussion through working with Reflective Teaching Portfolios and Cooperative Learning Groups at the end of each chapter. Teacher candidates learn the implications of such topics as language diversity, the academic achievement gap, and racism along with guidance to plan lessons designed to develop a community of learners in their classroom.
