Cathodic protection systems employing a mixed precious metal oxide coated titanium mesh anode require a cementitious overlay to encapsulate the anode. Several types of overlays have been used including latex modified concrete for five years. Laboratory and field performance have indicated the overlays using a styrene-butadiene rubber latex modifier do not have any adverse operational or performance affects on the cathodic protection system. Acrylic modifiers have been found to cause the formation of anode reaction products. Data are presented on laboratory tests and on completed field projects.

Since the 1970s, research projects and field studies have been conducted on different methods for protecting reinforced concrete bridges from corrosion damage. The methods include alternative reinforcement and slab design, barrier methods, electrochemical methods, and corrosion inhibitors. Each method and its underlying principles are described, performance results of laboratory and/or field trials are reviewed, and systems are evaluated based on the results of the trials. Using performance results from the studies and costs obtained from transportation agencies, an economic analysis is used to estimate the cost of each system over a 75-year economic life using discount rates of 2%, 4% and 6%.

Laboratory evaluations were carried out on a series of anode materials, including aluminum, magnesium, and zinc alloys. Anode/steel couples were placed in simulated concrete environments consisting of sealed containers filled with silica sand treated with a mixed alkali-chloride solution. Measurements of current flow, circuit resistance, potential, and depolarization were made over a period of 18 weeks. Based on results obtained, aluminum and zinc anodes were found to hold the most promise for use as galvanic anodes in reinforced concrete bridge decks. A series of reinforced concrete test slabs were produced for evaluation of the candidate materials. Normal-weight structural concrete, structural lightweight concrete, free-draining concrete, and free-draining latex-modified concrete overlays were placed over the anodes to serve as riding surfaces. Performance of the cathodic protection (CP) systems was evaluated using current flow and depolarization techniques.

A dozen papers from a June 1992 symposium in Louisville, Kentucky review the current use of organic polymers dispersed in water and formulated to add to portland cement. One sets out the status of ASTM's forthcoming specification and test methods. Others discuss such aspects as solid grade acrylic c
