The 1990 ESPRIT Conferene is being held in Brussels from the 12th November to the 15th November. Well over 1700 participants from all over Europe and overseas are expected to attend the various events. The Conference will offer the opportunity to be updated on the results ofthe ESPRITprojects and Basic Research actions andto develop international contacts with colleagues, both within a specific branch of Information Technology and across different branches. The first three days of the Conference are devoted to presentations of Esprit projects and Basic Research actions structured into plenary and parallel sessions; the scope of the Conference has been broadened this year by the inclusion of several well-known international speakers. All areas of Esprit work are covered: Microelectronics, Information Processing Systems, Office and Business Systems, Computer Integrated Manufacturing, Basic Research and aspects of the Information Exchange System. During the IT Forum on Thursday November 15th, major European industrial and political decision-makers will address the audience in the morning. In the afternoon, a Round Table will discuss the impact of Information Technology on society. More than 100 projects and actions will display their major innovations and achieve ments at the Esprit Exhibition which will be, for the first time, open to the general public.

Time series with mixed spectra are characterized by hidden periodic components buried in random noise. Despite strong interest in the statistical and signal processing communities, no book offers a comprehensive and up-to-date treatment of the subject. Filling this void, Time Series with Mixed Spectra focuses on the methods and theory for the stati

Code Generation - Concepts, Tools, Techniques is based upon the proceedings of the Dagstuhl workshop on code generation which took place from 20-24 May 1991. The aim of the workshop was to evaluate current methods of code generation and to indicate the main directions which future research is likely to take. It provided an excellent forum for the exchange of ideas and had the added advantage of bringing together European and American experts who were unlikely to meet at less specialised gatherings. This volume contains 14 of the 30 papers presented at the Dagstuhl workshop. The papers deal mainly with the following four topics: tools and techniques for code generation, code generation for parallel architectures, register allocation and phase ordering problems, and formal methods and validations. Most of the papers assess the progress of on-going research work, much of which is published here for the first time, while others provide a review of recently completed projects. The volume also contains summaries of two discussion groups which looked at code generation tools and parallel architectures. As a direct result of one of these discussions, a group of the participants have collaborated to make a pure BURS system available for public distribution. This system, named BURG, is currently being beta-tested. Code Generation - Concepts, Tools, Techniques provides a representative summary of state-of-the-art code generation techniques and an important assessment of possible future innovations. It will be an invaluable reference work for researchers and practitioners in this important area.

As we approach the end of the 20th century we can look back upon the achievements that have been made in a variety of human endeavours with pride. Enormous strides have been made to improve the quality of life of millions of people through the application of the scientific discoveries made during this and past centuries. The 20th century will be remembered as much for the mass exploitation of scientific discovery as for the discoveries themselves. The technological age has meant that the human being is able to contemplate activities which "defy" nature. For example, some of the work involved in the preparation of these proceedings has been done whilst travelling at over 500 miles per hour seven miles above the surface of the earth. It is not difficult to conjecture about the effect that this relatively recent technology has had upon a number of "systems". Air transportation has provided a number of benefits including such disparate examples such as enabling holidays, famine relief and the cross fertilisation of cultural practices from other lands. Equally, there have been undesirable effects such as enabling the means of mass destruction, interference in other cultures and the speedy transportation of disease. Moreover, the physical presence of the aeroplane itself represents the consumption of fossil fuels, a source of pollution and a change in the way think about life. The view expressed here is of course the view of an inhabitant of the "western world".

Scientists and engineers from industry, academia, and major research institutes from 19 countries contributed to the Vienna Conference on Human Computer Interaction (VCHCI '93). This volume contains the proceedings of the conference. Only submissions of the highest scientific quality were accepted as papers, and all contributions address the latest research and application in the human aspects of design and use of computing systems. The papers cover a large field of human computer interaction including design, evaluation, interactive architectures, cognitive models, workplace environment, and HCI application areas. The motto of the conference, Fin de Si cle, affiliates Vienna's intellectual tradition to the field's progressive development at the end of this century. The VCHCI is focused on showing that HCI is more than an area to beautify interaction with computers, provokes disputes among its different contributing fields, does not flee the vital questions forpeople using computers, and provides radically new opportunities for users.

This book is based on a PhD dissertation which was accepted by the faculty of Law and Economics at the University of Bern, Switzerland. The ideas presented were partially developed in a research project founded by the Swiss National Sci ence Foundation in 1993 and 1994. This research project was concerned with evaluating the application of database triggers and active databases for the im plementation of business rules. We recognized among other things the lack of a methodology for modeling such business rules on the conceptual level. Therefore, this became the focus of the follow-up research which resulted in this book. All this work would not have been possible without the help of several people. First of all, I would like to give special thanks to my thesis supervisor Prof. Dr. Gerhard Knolmayer. He not only initiated the research project and found an in dustry partner, but also provided very valuable ideas, and critically reviewed and discussed the resulting publications. Furthermore, I would like to express my thanks to the second thesis supervisor Prof. Dr. Sham Navathe from Georgia In stitute of Technology who influenced my work with results from a former re search project and who agreed to evaluate the resulting PhD Dissertation.
