A worldwide struggle between democracy and authoritarianism set against a backdrop of global surveillance capitalism is unmistakable. Fascism, Vulnerability, and the Escape from Freedom offers a multidisciplinary analysis drawing on psychology and literature to provide readers with a deeper understanding of the mechanisms that drive people to abandon democracy in favor of vertically organized authoritarianism and even fascism. In a comparative study of texts selected for their insights and occasional blind spots regarding fascist experiments of the past 100 years, Delogu examines fascism’s exploitation of fear (of change, loss, and death), disruption, and extreme inequality. The book offers an accessible and persuasive argument linking fascist authoritarianism, also called “right-wing populism,” to certain underlying conditions, such as a rise in us-versus-them thinking; distrust or simple apathy regarding democratic institutions, norms, and results; the vulnerabilities that result from extreme inequality (economic, social, racial); and addictions and codependency. Stressful events, such as a pandemic, an environmental disaster, or deep recession aggravate these harmful factors and make the fascist temptation, including the use of violence, almost irresistible. Delogu’s distinctive examination of texts that plumb the unconscious reveal linkages between actions and unavowable motives that purely historical and theoretical studies of fascism leave out. He was born in the warzone. The invasions of the North Vietnamese Communists had caused total destruction throughout the entirety of his parents village when he was just four years of age. He finally escaped successfully on his eleventh attempt and his boat was so lucky to get rescued by a German ship in the unforgiving ocean. He settled in the United States of America after years of long waiting in the refugee camp. He has found the life of freedom and dignity in America from the hell of the evil Communists. He has appreciated so much about his new country harboring him and he was determined to serve and help protect the freedom and democracy for his new motherland. He joined the United States Navy and became a sailor, serving multiple deployments. He was very happy and dreamed to become a Navy jet fighter pilot someday. Unfortunately, he got injured while performing his duty. His medical separation from the US Navy saddened his heart and soul. Now he, as a disable veteran, had to fight for survival for himself and his family with two small daughters. He had to return to college and further his education. He overcame all major obstacles and impediments mentally and physically; he graduated from a Doctor of Pharmacy program from Nova Southeastern University. Since then, he has been working as a pharmacist to support his family. He was extremely happy to have another opportunity to serve his patients, his community. However, his old injury continues to aggravate him over the years; nonetheless, he continues to fight to support his family and serve the people he loves.

At least since the publication of Isaiah Berlin's famous essay "Two Concepts of Liberty" nearly half a century ago, political philosophers have argued vigorously over the relative merits of "positive" and "negative" accounts of freedom. Matthew Kramer writes squarely within the negative-liberty tradition, but he incorporates a number of ideas that are quite often associated with theories of positive liberty. Much of The Quality of Freedom is devoted to elaborating the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of particular freedoms and unfreedoms; however, the book's cardinal objective is to establish the measurability of each person's overall freedom and of each society's aggregate freedom. On the one hand, Kramer contends that the existence of any particular instance of liberty or unfreedom is a matter of fact that can be confirmed or disconfirmed without any reliance on evaluative or normative considerations. On the other hand, he argues that the extent of each person's overall freedom or unfreedom cannot be ascertained entirely in the absence of evaluative assumptions. By combining those two positions and developing them in detail, Kramer pits himself against all positive accounts of liberty and most negative accounts. In the course of so doing, he aims to demonstrate the rigorous measurability of overall liberty - something that many writers on freedom have casually dismissed as impossible. Although Kramer concentrates principally on constructing a systematic analysis of sociopolitical freedom, he engages critically with the work of many of the leading contemporary writers on the topic.
