Apostolicity Then and Now explores apostolicity from its origin to today. Apostolicity is a fundamental mark of the church, referring to Jesus' faith given to, carried on, and taught?unaltered?by a continuous line of apostles. This book primarily focuses on how apostolicity pertains to the church as a whole and views apostolic succession in light of how apostolicity is applicable to the church. Scriptural, historical, theological, and ecumenical contexts provide a thorough study that includes worldviews and their impact on apostolicity. Chapters are "Who Were the Apostles?" ?Why the Early Churches Understood Themselves as Apostolic,? ?Apostolicity in History,? ?Apostolicity and the Theologians,? ?Apostolicity and the Classical and Modern Worldviews,? ?Apostolicity in a Postmodern World,? ?Apostolicity in Ecumenical Dialogue,? and ?Apostolicity in an Ecumenical Church.?

The inaugural volume of the ECC series provides a fresh, readable translation of 1 and 2 Timothy together with notes and commentary on this highly relevant section of Scripture. The Notes section of the commentary offers detailed philological analysis of the majority of the words used in these two Pastoral Epistles. The Comment section guides readers through the complex theological, historical, and practical issues facing the heirs of Paul in the Christian church. The issues treated in 1 and 2 Timothy have a remarkably modern ring to them. Addressing such "contemporary" topics as the qualifications for church leadership, the roles of women, the use of wealth, heterodoxy, worship, and ethics, these Pauline letters remain highly relevant to church life today. This new volume not only offers the best of current biblical scholarship on Paul's letters to Timothy but also demonstrates the high standard of excellence marking the ECC series.

This is the final volume in a four-volume series, using contemporary texts to illustrate key themes in the history of Nonconformity in England and Wales. Although the twentieth century was in many ways a century of decline, this book shows that there was still much life in the nonconformist tradition. It also looks at contemporary issues such as racism and the place of women.

"The essays collected in this book aim to give the reader an overview of the theological and pastoral nature of the diaconate and thus to clarify the fundamental identity of the deacon, for those who are discerning such a call as aspirants and those who are already candidates for the office." --From Introduction.

Contemporary texts are used in this volume to illustrate key themes in the history of Nonconformity in England and Wales. Although the twentieth century was in many ways a century of decline, this book shows that there was still much life in the Nonconformist tradition. It also looks at contemporary issues such as racism and the place of women. Through contemporary writings it provides an insight into the life and thought of the English Free Churches in a century in which they expected to come into their own, only to discover that they faced new challenges and the problems of decline.

Local church life is changing radically and patterns of clergy training and deployment with it. Multi-congregational groupings are increasingly the norm with fewer stipendiary clergy and greater reliance on self-supporting and lay ministry. Meanwhile some aspects of priestly ministry are being carried out by specialist practitioners such as missioners working across a number of parishes. All of this raises questions about how we understand, prepare for and practice ministry and leadership in the church today. As ministry increasingly becomes the responsibility of the local congregation and priesthood more about supervision, this key book explores the theology of such a model and how it is beginning to work in practice, drawing insights gained from rural ministry which has pioneered advances in multi-congregation ministry settings.
