In recent years, the field of environmental microbiology has taken on new importance. But even with a wealth of new research and new interest in the subject, there has never been a single resource to which professionals and students could turn for reliable, detailed coverage of the field. This six-volume set serves as a comprehensive look at the field complete with the latest cutting-edge research. The Encyclopedia of Environmental Microbiology provides, in one source, all the information researchers and scientists need for this rapidly growing field. It covers the full range of topics, from aquatic microbiology and environmental biotechnology, to public health and water treatment microbiology. Features include: Approximately 350 articles provide A-Z coverage of the entire field of environmental microbiology and all important topicsExtensive cross-referencing, bibliographies, and a complex indexIllustrated with photographs, tables, and line drawings

Micro-organisms play a major role in the geochemistry of the planet, forming the basic stage in the food chain, and thus sustaining the existence of higher evolutionary life. The continuing interaction between these living organisms and the environment, combined with their exploitation by man are shaping the material world today.Over the last few y

The nature and scope of the text The environment in which we live has to a large extent been determined by the activities of innumerable organisms interacting with each other and with their immediate surroundings. From the point of view of the microbiologist, it is obvious that microbial activity has a great part to play in the continuing maintenance of conditions suitable for other forms of life on this planet. There has therefore always been an awareness of the need for a good understanding of how microorganisms react in the environ ment, and this has been heightened from time to time as detrimental microbial activities become evident under certain conditions. The need for a good understanding has recently assumed a new importance as the era of microbial manipulation dawns-microbiology has always been a practical discipline, and the possibilities of beneficial modification on a global scale may be within our grasp. The growing interest in environmental microbiology can be gauged from the increase in relevant undergraduate teaching. However, one of the most serious problems confronting the student is the dearth of appropriate texts. In part this is a reflection of the plethora of potential subject matter. The study of the relationships of microorganisms with each other and with their environments-"microbial ecology" -constitutes a subject area which is far from precisely circumscribed, and each researcher or teacher has his own personal notion of which topics are appropriate.

Environmental microbiology is the study of those microorganisms which exist in natural or artificial environments. Molecular biology has revolutionized the study of microorganisms in the environment and improved our understanding of the composition, phylogeny, and physiology of microbial communities. Environmental microbiology is a growing niche area related to environmental biology, but dealing with the biology of lifeforms too small to see with the naked eye. Environmental microbiologists examine microbes as they relate to the environment - their effects on the landscape and how they are affected by it. This will include the spread of viruses and bacteria, and the distribution of algae, fungi and parasitical organisms. Some of these have profound implications to human health and others provide vital services to the environment. Every form of life that shares the ecology with us performs a function for local ecologies. Soil microbiology is the scientific discipline that is concerned with the study of all biological aspects of the microorganisms (bacteria, archaea, viruses, fungi, parasites and protozoa) that exist in the soil environment. This book is an area of science that studies of physiology, genetics, interactions and functions of microorganisms in the environment, and makes use of this knowledge with the ultimate goal of maintaining environmental quality and contributing to the sustainable development of modern society.
